Africa's smartphone market?grew by 3% year on year in Q3 2024, reaching 18.4 million units, reflecting resilience amid a complex economic landscape. While stabilizing currencies and easing price pressures have provided relief in certain regions, the future of Africa's smartphone market hinges on the ability of governments and vendors to tackle these structural hurdles. Canalys projects a cautious 1% growth in smartphone shipments for 2025, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to unlock the market’s potential. Egypt led Africa’s smartphone market with an impressive double-digit 34% growth for the third consecutive quarter, strengthening its position as the region’s fastest-recovering market. In contrast, Nigeria, the continent’s second-largest market by volume, recorded a modest 1% growth. Partners deliver 73% of all IT deals and can add value throughout all stages of the?customer lifecycle ? In a vendor partner program, recognition across the customer lifecycle — before, during and after the transaction — is now twice as valuable as pre-sales or marketing support, and three times as important as enablement programs. ? Partners are embracing new roles, charging for services like consulting, design, implementation and long-term managed services. Surprisingly, 44% are now co-developing and innovating products, becoming ISVs or IHVs themselves! ? Chinese-owned brands’ passenger vehicle exports expected to reach 4.5 million in 2024 Passenger vehicle exports by Chinese-owned brands?will reach 2.5 million units in the second half of 2024, resulting in a total of 4.5 million units for full-year 2024, which translates to a growth rate of 29%. The European Union’s tariffs and falling EV demand are slowing the growth of Chinese battery electric vehicle (BEV) exports to 9% (860,000 units). As a result, the share of BEV exports will fall from 22.5% in 2023 to 19.0% in 2024. The share of plug-in hybrid and hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV and HEV) exports will exceed 10% for the first time in three years, reaching 310,000 and 240,000 units, respectively. Latin America and Europe are the key regions driving the export growth of PHEVs and HEVs by Chinese brands. Despite rapid growth in export volumes, Chinese OEMs continue to face various uncertainties in the global market. For several OEMs, weak channel and product localization capabilities have led to significant disparities in sales performance and inventory levels across overseas markets. Global cloud spending surged 21% in Q3 2024? The global spending on?cloud infrastructure services reached US$82.0 billion. Customer investment in the hyperscalers’ AI offerings fueled growth, prompting leading cloud vendors to escalate their investments in AI. Top three cloud vendors – Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud – remained stable from the previous quarter, with these providers together accounting for 64% of total expenditure. Total combined spending with these three providers grew by 26% year on year, and all three reported sequential growth. Market leader #AWS maintained a year-on-year growth rate of 19%, consistent with the previous quarter. But it was outpaced by both #Microsoft, with 33% growth, and #Google Cloud, with 36% growth. In actual dollar terms, however, AWS outgrew both Microsoft and Google Cloud, increasing sales by almost US$4.4 billion on the previous year. Analyst quotes: “Continued substantial expenditure will present new challenges, requiring cloud vendors to carefully balance their investments in AI with the cost discipline needed to fund these initiatives,” said Rachel Brindley, Senior Director at Canalys. “As the AI foundational models mature, cloud providers are focused on leveraging their enhanced capabilities to empower a broader range of core products and services. By integrating these advanced models into their existing offerings, they aim to enhance functionality, improve performance and increase user engagement across their platforms, thereby unlocking new revenue streams,” said Yi Zhang, Analyst at Canalys.
