“Often referred to as the ‘silent pandemic’, antimicrobial resistance is a particularly concerning public health threat. It represents an area where Canada has an opportunity to not only ensure preparedness, but also emerge as a global leader,” writes GSK Canada’s Alison Pozzobon. “Canada should use its G7 presidency to action its?Pan-Canadian Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, and?move the world from discourse to action by launching a national pull incentive designed to fit within our federal-provincial-territorial health system,” writes Henry Skinner, CEO of AMR Action Fund & Bettina Hamelin, President of Innovative Medicines Canada - Médicaments novateurs Canada. As Canada prepares to assume the G7 presidency, it has a singular opportunity to improve patient outcomes in Canada and globally by designing and implementing a meaningfully sized pull incentive that secures access to needed antimicrobials for Canadian patients and incentivizes private investment into the next generation of therapeutics to treat drug-resistant bacterial and fungal infections. I had the pleasure of highlighting the importance of Canada’s leadership at last week’s AMR Symposium in Toronto at a joint session with Sepsis Canada and Critical Care Canada, hosted by bioMérieux and the University of Toronto’s Emerging & Pandemic Infections Consortium. Today, I co-authored a piece in The Hill Times with Innovative Medicines Canada - Médicaments novateurs Canada emphasizing the need for Canada to act now and get the right-sized pull incentive in place. In addition to being Canada’s fair contribution to solving the AMR innovation gap, such a pull incentive could also serve as a model for other G7 governments. Canada must not squander this chance—the costs of inaction are simply too great. https://lnkd.in/esVnc5PF

Antibiotics are failing. Across the globe, patients are falling ill with untreatable infections caused by bacteria that have developed resistance to existing drugs. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is projected to kill 8.2 million people annually by 2050 and is considered by the World Health Organization as one of the greatest public health threats of our time. Canada is not immune to this danger, and our policymakers are starting to grasp the significance of this threat. Sen. Judith G. Seidman, C- Quebec, recently warned that “antimicrobial resistance is likely to be Canada’s next major health crisis,” and that “it is time for the federal government to take sufficient action to address it.” Canada is uniquely positioned to act. In January, our nation will assume the G7 Presidency. From this position of leadership, the federal government should action its Pan-Canadian Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance – a concrete step that will both support our domestic biotech sector and set the global standard in AMR policymaking. Delaying action is no longer an option – AMR is a forever problem. Canada has an opportunity to lead and fulfill its obligations to both current and future generations of Canadians, and to create the blueprint for addressing AMR that will save lives around the world.
