On Global Recycling Day and every day, we recognize the importance of advancing toward a circular economy by promoting reuse and recycling throughout our value chain, as well as fostering sustainability education for students. To celebrate this holiday in our headquarters community, our employees held educational presentations focused on aluminum can making and recycling for students at Environmental Charter School (ECS) during their Global Recycling Day event. We have also partnered with ECS, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Can Manufacturers Institute, Recycling is like Magic! and the Mon-Valley Recycling Center to support students in collecting and recycling aluminum beverage cans. Since the partnership started last October, students have successfully collected nearly 42,000 cans. "We are thrilled to support the second graders at ECS who have shown dedication to accomplishing their recycling goals," said Melissa MacDonald, our customer sustainability business partner, Packaging Coatings. ??To celebrate #GlobalRecyclingDay, we released new research with The Aluminum Association quantifying the #aluminum beverage can’s circularity success! ??New research, conducted by RRS (Resource Recycling Systems), demonstrates that used beverage cans move quickly from recycling bin to newly formed cans in less than 60 days on average in the United States. ??This is further proof that aluminum beverage cans exemplify a robust, domestic #circular economy operating at scale. Our initiative, Every Can Counts US, returns to Mardi Gras, joining forces with the New Orleans Office of Resilience & Sustainability for the Recycle Dat! campaign ?? This year, our team is expanding efforts to surpass last year’s collection of approximately 145,000 drink cans. As part of the activation, they are bringing along the Every Can Counts #PixelCan installation to raise awareness about aluminium can recycling. All collected cans will be recycled, with proceeds benefiting local charities. ??Let the good times roll for aluminum beverage can recycling! The CMI team visited New Orleans last week to support Every Can Counts as part of the #RecycleDat initiative. This is a citywide effort to recycle thousands of aluminum beverage cans along the #MardiGras parade routes. ??This year, we expanded our activation by adding a can mosaic at #RecycleWorld. This is a large-scale can collection site (at St. Charles & Louisiana Avenues) designed to engage the public on recycling best practices. ??????Over the course of two #MardiGras weekends, we created colorful recycling-themed art supported by a local New Orleans artist, who reused more than 2,000 cans to create two murals. These cans, and thousands more collected, will go on to be recycled for scrap value that will be doubled by Every Can Counts and donated back to three local New Orleans nonprofits: Grow Dat Youth Farm, T.R.E.E. Our can capture equipment grants, funded by Crown Holdings, Inc. & Ardagh Metal Packaging, are critical to reaching ambitious U.S. aluminum beverage can #recycling rate targets. With these grants, millions of additional cans will be recycled into new cans quickly. On average, aluminum beverage cans go from recycling bin to newly formed can in less than 60 days.
