CAMRIS Military Health & Research examines trends, patterns, and cause-and-effect relationships of military life, work exposures, environment, deployment, and job duties on overall health, disease state, and injury in military populations. Our team uses epidemiology data to assist the DOD in decreasing variations in the assessment of complex medical issues, such as psychological health screening and diagnosis, to ensure everyone who can benefit from interventions is properly identified and has treatment options. Our findings and accompanying recommendations provide valuable information to the DOD for the creation of policy, acquisition of new protective equipment and standards, novel intervention techniques, and health promotion programs. March marks Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the achievements, leadership, and lasting impact of women throughout history. From groundbreaking discoveries in science and medicine to advancements in business, government, and the arts, women have shaped industries, challenged barriers, and influenced society in countless ways. The origins of this observance trace back to 1980 when it was first recognized as a national week-long celebration in the United States before expanding to a full month. Today, it serves as a reminder of the progress made and the perseverance of those who paved the way for future generations. As we honor Women’s History Month, let’s take time to reflect on these contributions and the ongoing influence of women whose work continues to shape our world.

Disease processes involve interactions between multiple physiological systems and organs that cannot always be adequately replicated using cell and tissue models. This limitation necessitates a move to animal models to bridge laboratory innovation and human research. CAMRIS experts assist with the development of appropriate animal models that can replicate pathogenesis and the physiological response to disease states in humans. This research step is critical to validate the safety, efficacy, and pharmacodynamics of prospective therapeutics and understand the physiological impact at the cell, tissue, and organ level before transitioning to human clinical studies. CAMRIS congratulates Misbah R., who was recognized at the Naval Health Research Center’s award ceremony on February 12th, for her outstanding contributions to the Febrile Respiratory Infection and Acute Gastroenteritis Biosurveillance projects. Her efforts in expediting biosurveillance reporting and processes have been invaluable, ensuring alignment with GEIS requirements and optimizing OID’s reporting capabilities. Ms. Rashad leveraged her strong analytical and leadership skills to drive the manuscript writing for the Pre- and Post-Pandemic Febrile Respiratory Illness Rates Among U.S. Military Recruit Populations study. This culminated in her associated poster on the subject being featured at the Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS), where it was noted by her colleagues as reflecting her dedication and expertise in the field. Ms. Rashad has significantly advanced the epidemiologist team’s and OID’s goals. We appreciate her commitment, hard work, and impact and are grateful to have her on our team.
