Operationalizing #advancedmanufacturing for the joint force.? CAMRE executed the largest distributed advanced manufacturing demonstration the United States Department of Defense has conducted to date during Trident Warrior / #RIMPAC 24. More than 300 parts, metal and polymer, were produced during the exercise. The focus was on delivering readiness solutions for the US Navy, United States Marine Corps, US Army, United States Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard. Naval Postgraduate School students played a pivotal role in ensuring mission success and their warrior-scholar ethos shined throughout their contributions. We were truly humbled with the outpouring of support from our joint and commercial partners. We would not have had the "violent successes" we did without their talent pool and equipment. Each of them volunteered their time and resources, which only reinforced how important advanced manufacturing is in their minds, especially for a contested logistics battle in U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. Innovation at NPS is accelerated by student operational insight. Ten NPS students from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Army recently returned from Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) and Trident Warrior 2024 exercises after conducting research on additive manufacturing technology applications at installations and aboard ships at sea. The school’s Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing and Research (CAMRE) and FLEETWERX enabled the effort, testing cutting-edge equipment to produce repair parts on-scene, increasing readiness. One significant accomplishment aboard USS Somerset (LPD 25) resulted in the repair of a reverse osmosis pump, critical to producing fresh water. “It was great to see how resourceful the entire team was on the Somerset in a time of need,” said Marine Corps Maj. Daniel Szurick, a master’s student at NPS. “That’s exactly the naval culture that will allow us to succeed in conflict.” “We are working to implement advanced metal manufacturing to better supplement traditional fabrication methods, repair fleet assets quicker, and assist in revitalizing the submarine industrial base to meet production goals,” added Lt. Cmdr. Zachary Vrtis, currently at NPS pursuing a doctorate in mechanical engineering. Conducting applied research in the operating environment is a hallmark of the NPS experience. “This allowed NPS students to see the relevance of their studies and research to real-world Navy challenges, which could greatly enhance learning outcomes here. At the same time, we are targeting the current gaps in the rapid deployment of these emerging technologies,” said Dr. Emre Gunduz, associate professor in NPS’ mechanical and aerospace engineering department and the technical director at CAMRE. ??
