What does the world of college planning look like in our country without the U.S. Department of Education? What does it mean for student safety in a new reality? I'm working on figuring it out, but I don't think we can wait to talk about it.

Hello, friends and colleagues! The National Association for College Admission Counseling is hosting me today as I lead a seminar for their GWI Equity in Action virtual series about the higher education landscape for LGBTQ+ students. We'll cover things like anti-LGBTQ+ shenanigans at the federal, state, and local level, as well as the college search for LGBTQ+ students aiming to find their best, safe, most supportive colleges. The virtual workshop is today at 2PM ET / 11AM PT. It goes without saying that understanding this topic could change a young person's trajectory in an immediate way. Professionals who register will be able to attend live, but anyone can register before or after the session if they want to view the workshop on demand. NACAC has arranged this as a paid session, and NACAC members receive a discount on registration, with Title I school professionals receiving a further reduced rate. Check out the link below for more details about registration and participation. I always love to share my knowledge and resources with school counselors, college admission staff, and IECs. The work you do for your students will affect their entire lives, and I love you all for this. https://lnkd.in/gdJR-2-2

It's April 2024. Why not learn skills around advocacy and communicating with elected representatives? You can use these skills forever.

The Los Angeles LGBT Center is organizing a virtual day of advocacy, so no matter where you are in the country, you can join, learn, and support. The primary day of advocacy is on Monday 4/29, and there appear to be ancillary opportunities as well. They have a list of five priorities, but for those who know about SB 1491... I have advocated for CA SB 1491 to be added to the list of priorities. Let me know if you join this initiative... I will be there! Link: Volunteer for the L.A. Make sure to attend this important session this Wednesday at 12PM PT. In partnership with Western Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC)... Higher ed landscape changes in California are happening right now, this month, in the California legislature. Make sure to attend this session to learn the new ways California will protect and support LGBTQ+ students on college campuses.

Ah. I'm really excited about this important panel coming up this week. This Wednesday 12-1PM PT / 3-4PM ET. https://lnkd.in/gTWWKmNT Title IX exemptions make room for colleges to discriminate and permit harassment of LGBTQ+ students. But California is pushing back. Not just that, but they amended their initial bill to create a number of other awesome protections for LGBTQ+ students, including ... well, I should let the Caucus consultant explain this at the session, because I really don't want to say it wrong. But, basically, it's game-changing legislation for LGBTQ+ students who may be in danger on some college campuses and not even know it. The session is open to the public! (When you register, if you see a confusing question on the form about California or Nevada, just say "California.") I'll be moderating! Don't miss it. https://lnkd.in/gTWWKmNT Amazing panelists include: Genny Beemyn, Ph.D., The Stonewall Center, University of Massachusetts Amherst); Jacob Fraker, M.S.W., California Legislative LGBTQ+ Caucus; Shiwali Patel, J.D. (National Women's Law Center) Moderator: Robert Powers, M.A., Campus Q
