?? Another year at SAIL is drawing to a close. Time to take a look back at 2024: ?? We are full of gratitude for all that we have achieved. From our successful AI Winter School in February, together with the Doctoral Networks KnowGraphs and LEMUR, to the participation of SAIL members in various exciting workshops and the continuation of our lecture series “Robust AI”. ?? A particular highlight was the joint event “How Sustainable is AI?” with The Johns Hopkins University at their impressive Science Diplomacy Hub in Washington DC, where we had the opportunity to exchange ideas with scientists from different areas of AI research. ?? Stay tuned for the next part of our little year in review!

“Democracies are not self-executing. They need our help and input. We are dealing with global issues, not simply national ones, and hence need to talk with each other, not at each other.” Says Ambassador Michael C. Polt, Ambassador in residence at Arizona State University, and pays reference to Benjamin Franklin, who in 1787 during the Constitutional Convention allegedly said, “What do we have? A Republic—if you can keep it”, emphasizing the shared responsibility of the citizenry to maintain the rule of law. Under the headline “Democracy and Diplomacy”, we co-hosted an inspiring and thought-provoking luncheon at THE NATIONAL PRESS CLUB OF WASHINGTON DC, together with our great partners: University Alliance Ruhr, Campus OWL New York, University of Cologne, Embassy of Germany in Washington, D.C., Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation, and German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH) New York. German Ambassador to the U.S. Andreas Michaelis and Nathanael Liminski, Minister for Federal, European, International Affairs and Media of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, kicked off the program and emphasized the importance of global collaboration: “Science diplomacy is not just nice to have, but it’s essential. We must continue to cooperate internationally amid global challenges.” And: “Scientific knowledge refutes fake news. There is much more that we have in common than what divides us.” The following expert panel with Ambassador Polt and Emily B. Campbell, Ass. Professor of Sociology, Rhode Island College was moderated by Ona Ambrozaite, The Johns Hopkins University Science Diplomacy Hub Co-Director. The very engaging discussion explored the crucial role of the rule of law in upholding functional and sustainable democracies in both the US and Germany, touching on the politicization of science, misinformation, and the protection of academic freedom in support of evidence-based policymaking. If and when democracies die, they do so from within. Therefore, everybody agreed that being and preserving a thriving democracy requires constant and hard work from each and every one of us. As Amb. Polt summed it up: “We need to work and build on it every day—it’s our shared responsibility.” American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Alexander von Humboldt Foundation DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst Eva Bosbach Priya S.
