Advancing Democracy Through Law

关于我们

Campaign Legal Center (CLC) is dedicated to advancing democracy through law, fighting for every American’s right to participate in the democratic process. CLC uses tactics such as litigation, policy advocacy, communications and partnerships to win victories that result in a more transparent, accountable and inclusive democracy. Our long-term goal is a government responsive to the people. CLC’s commitment is to democracy, not to any political party or to any particular electoral result. We think about systemic impact when we choose which work to pursue, but we work at all levels of government to introduce innovative ideas that will drive significant change or set an important legal precedent. Our priority is engaging and driving action – whether in the courtroom, newsroom or statehouse.

  • BREAKING: Campaign Legal Center is filing an ethics complaint against Trump's Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, for promoting Tesla stock on TV — a clear violation of federal ethics rules. We're demanding the Office of Government Ethics and officials at the U.S. Department of Commerce hold Lutnick accountable and reassure the public that their officials will face consequences if they use their public office to enrich themselves or their allies. • It's #SunshineWeek, a time to highlight the importance of open government and transparency in our democracy. Transparency is at the heart of a healthy democracy: Americans have a right to know who is spending money to influence their vote and that their government is working for them, not to help special interests. Without strong, well-enforced transparency laws, the people are left wondering if elected officials’ actions are for the public good or just for their personal interest. Now more than ever, Campaign Legal Center is committed to fighting for transparency. Here's how:

  • Elon Musk and DOGE are unconstitutionally undermining our system of checks and balances at the expense of Americans’ well-being. DOGE has dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and is threatening to do the same with the U.S. Department of Education. Without authority, Musk and DOGE have illegally and unconstitutionally canceled federal funds that already were appropriated and have fired thousands of everyday Americans who performed critical functions. This unlawful chaos is felt by Americans nationwide. National parks and historic sites are missing rangers who are essential for safety and public access. Innovative scientific research has been stopped in its tracks. Thousands of students who rely on federal grants to access education are now unsure of their futures. Campaign Legal Center filed a lawsuit to stop these lawless and unconstitutional actions that are harming everyday Americans. https://lnkd.in/e4U3qQph

  • Elon Musk and DOGE's actions lawless and unconstitutional. Campaign Legal Center sued them to stop their actions, which are causing real harm to everyday Americans. As Sunny Hostin said on The View about our lawsuit: "We really need to keep our eye on that particular case."

  • On Friday, March 14, at 2 p.m. ET, Campaign Legal Center’s Aaron McKean will be joined by authors Jen Heerwig and Brian McCabe to discuss their book, “Democracy Vouchers and the Promise of Fairer Elections in Seattle.” Heerwig and McCabe explore the success and impact of Seattle’s public financing model and how placing political money directly in the hands of voters through vouchers can level the campaign financing playing field, and empower more Americans to make their voices heard.

NEW: Elon Musk appears to have corrupted decision-making at the Federal Aviation Administration and unfairly influenced government decisions to benefit his satellite business Starlink — a clear and illegal conflict of interest. Campaign Legal Center is demanding an investigation. “The American people deserve an unimpeded investigation to determine whether Elon Musk has violated conflict of interest laws by prioritizing his own personal financial interests over the public good," says CLC's Kedric Payne.? If Musk influenced decisions at the FAA to benefit his company, he is preventing the agency from making an unbiased choice solely in the interest of the public. The Department of Transportation’s acting Inspector General must investigate whether Musk violated the law. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eHZVT92z

  • #InternationalWomensDay reminds us of the indispensable role women have played to secure our freedom to vote. We honor trailblazers like Fannie Lou Hamer, who tirelessly fought against systemic discrimination to register thousands of Black Americans to vote in Mississippi. She co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus, an organization promoting and supporting women candidates for government positions.? ?? Her legacy drives us to keep working toward a democracy that is representative and responsive.?

  • Sixty years ago today, civil rights advocates in Alabama were violently attacked as they peacefully marched from Selma to Montgomery to demand voting rights for Black Americans — a day remembered as "Bloody Sunday." Their sustained advocacy in the face of violent opposition prompted the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Sixty years later, as the Supreme Court has weakened the Voting Rights Act's critical protections against racial discrimination in voting, there is work to do in Alabama and across the country to protect and expand the freedom to vote. In Alabama, the legacy of Selma lives on with Campaign Legal Center’s many local partners, including Greater Birmingham Ministries, League of Women Voters of Alabama, Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice, Southern Poverty Law Center, Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program, Alabama State Conference of the NAACP and ACLU of Alabama. On the anniversary of Bloody Sunday, we honor the civil rights leaders who fought for a truly inclusive democracy and pledge ourselves to supporting the continuing fight for the freedom to vote for all Americans.
