Congratulations Judge Mustafa Kasubhai on your Senate confirmation! Judge Kasubhai wasconfirmed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon by the U.S. Senate on November 19th. Judge Kasubhai is the first Asian American Article III judge in the District, as well as the first American Muslim to serve within the Ninth Circuit. Judge Kasubhai is a stalwart supporter of access to justice, legal aid, and the CEJ. Watch his keynote address from our 2022 Kick-Off Gala. His words are incredibly inspirational. The Campaign for Equal Justice and the Lane County legal community will honor Joe Richards at CEJ’s Lane County Luncheon on November 1. Joe devoted most of his career to a practice focused on employment and labor law matters for private and public bodies, especially school districts. He retired from Luvaas Cobb at the end of 2016 after more than 60 years but continued to provide legal assistance through pro bono work for the Lane County legal aid office. Joe was a stalwart supporter of legal aid throughout his career and supported CEJ since its beginnings in 1991. Joe was a leader in Lane County for championing access to justice and dedicating both his time and his dollars to legal aid. He will be greatly missed.

CEJ and legal aid teamed up to celebrate and honor bro bono month with a joint event—a CLE and party! We heard from pro bono coordinator Jill Mallery and attorney John Moot why pro bono work is so important and the impact it can have for clients. It was a pleasure to honor the attorneys who have given their time throughout their careers to support their communities. A huge thank you to Stoel Rives LLP Rives for hosting this event! Check out the photos from this event, and we would love to have you join us for the next one. https://lnkd.in/gi_-RuVn

Regional Spotlight: Grants Pass Office! The Grants Pass office is now fully staffed! Managing Attorney Inessa Wurscher and paralegal Diana Fellows are pleased to introduce two new members of the team. Joseph Mandala is originally from Malawi in Southeast Africa, and went on to attend the University of North Dakota School of Law. Joseph hopes to bring positive experiences to the people of Southern Oregon and beyond, and to meet the need for equal access to justice. Bailey Martin is originally from Kansas City, and went to law school at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. During law school, Bailey was involved in environmental justice work as well as public interest law. Bailey came to work for legal aid because of her passion for social justice and issues surrounding equity in the United States. She is excited to get to work with passionate and motivated individuals to help as many low-income Oregonians as possible.
