"The arrest of [ARSA leader] Ataullah offers an opportunity for regional and international actors to press for a more inclusive and sustainable resolution. #Bangladesh, #Myanmar’s national unity government and the Arakan Army must engage in meaningful dialogue with #Rohingya representatives to address grievances and ensure the safe, voluntary and dignified return of refugees." - Dr. Azeem Ibrahim https://arab.news/968sw

We are dedicated to restoring democracy and human rights in Myanmar (Burma). Will you join us?
关于我们
After the army’s seizure of power on February 1, 2021, Myanmar stands at the brink of returning to military dictatorship. Meanwhile, the new Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) is in the streets calling for a multi-ethnic democratic government. With Myanmar at this crossroads, we at the Campaign for a New Myanmar are building the international movement to support the Civil Disobedience Movement. We are organizing the campaigns in support of the CDM’s demand for global boycotts and sanctions of the Myanmar military and its business empire.

We will fight hard to defend and restore U.S. foreign aid programs for the Burmese people.
My response to the US funding freeze on life-saving programs and projects in Burma, and along the border, included in the latest monthly briefer by the US Campaign for Burma (USCB): "It is heart-wrenching and unfathomable to me to think that those in charge of deciding to suspend the life-saving assistance were two of the world’s wealthiest men; two men who do not know the feeling of seeing their children hungry or running with them to escape airstrikes. They do not know the weight of war. They do not see the fear that lingers even when the shooting and firing stops. Their ignorance and uninterest in working to restore and strengthen the humanitarian sector have been surpassed by their own greed and self-interest. While the Trump Administration may be under the illusion that this decision shows their strength, it reveals their cowardice." See the full briefer here: https://lnkd.in/gWHSQBp3

"When I was a child, my grandmother, my sister, my cat, and I would huddle together in a dimly lit room, and tuned to the BBC, RFA, or VOA. We had to be quiet because listening to these radio stations meant you’re being a traitor to your country. ???? Yet, those were the moments we felt connected—not just to people in different parts of our country, but to a world beyond our closed borders. These broadcasts were more than just news. They were a lifeline, a window to truth, a spark of hope in uncertain times. I read today that RFA and VOA Burmese will possibly be shut down (because Trump wants to cut broadcast to authoritarian regimes but he forgets he’s taking away an invaluable resource from the people, not the regimes) ... and it feels like losing an old friend. To the voices that reached us in the dark, thank you—for the hope, for the courage, and for the memories. What a sad day." - This story is from a Burmese woman who grew up under dictatorship in Myanmar. She also drew the accompanying picture here ??

"U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said Friday that the humanitarian aid cuts by the United States and other countries in Europe “are a crime.”" "He made the comment during a four-day visit to Bangladesh where he is assessing the plight of more than 1 million Rohingya refugees whose future remained uncertain over possible aid cuts soon." https://lnkd.in/eeaKVgVC

Mang Tha Par, a Christian from Chin State, had been pursuing master’s degrees in social science and development at Chiang Mai University so that she could help develop her rural hometown in Hakha, the capital of the beleaguered Chin State. Mang Tha Par was among 400 recipients of education grants from the Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship Program (DISP) funded by USAID. Yet in late January, the Trump administration cut DISP, describing it as wasteful and not aligned with national interests. https://lnkd.in/eEY8geCD

Back from a week at the #UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, where #Myanmar’s seat has now sat empty for four years because of the failure to credential the pro-democracy National Unity Government (NUG). Despite this impasse, Myanmar remains very much on the #HRC’s agenda. ? UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk – still the strongest UN voice on Myanmar – called the situation “among the worst in the world” and shamed the military junta for inflicting a “litany of human suffering that is difficult to fathom”. The High Commissioner urged UN Member States to look ahead to the “day after”, when the junta’s brutal repression ends, and to support a political path that involves the NUG, ethnic armed groups and representatives from women’s groups, youth and civil society. ? The #EU has circulated a strong draft resolution on Myanmar, with negotiations kicking off this week. ? Civil society continues to campaign. The Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M) met with a range of delegations and senior officials and held a media briefing, calling for coordinated international action to support the people’s vision of a post-military Myanmar. The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) hosted a side event with an expert panel who pushed States to refocus global attention on “four years of carnage in Myanmar”. ? And Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar, will present his new report next week. ? It's a solid start to #HRC58 with four weeks to go. Watch this space ???? ????
