March Madness is just around the corner, and we are excited to sponsor the 11th annual Bollinger Foundation NCAA basketball bracket challenge along with the International Economic Development Council, Ronnie L. Bryant, CEcD, FM, HLM, TPMA, Winner Partners, and Community Growth Strategies, LLC! This year, our goal is to raise $12,000 for The Bollinger Foundation, which provides funding for the education and emotional/mental health support of children who have lost a parent.     Just wrapped up an insightful few days at the International Economic Development Council Leadership Conference, where FDI and business attraction were front and center. The landscape is evolving fast, with major global shifts influencing how, where, and why companies are making investment decisions. Here are some key takeaways: ?? Who Will Invest in the U.S.? Companies that have to (due to tariffs or supply chain pressures). Suppliers whose exports will be impacted by policy changes. Companies seeking to sell to the U.S. government (especially with Buy American policies). Certain Canadian companies are looking to get ahead of the tariffs and are actively seeking opportunities in the US market (we have seen this from our own lead generation campaigns at ProspectEngage? and Camoin Associates). ?? Barriers to Investment Despite strong interest in the U.S., long-term FDI plans are on hold for many investors. Some key challenges: Steel and aluminum tariffs expanding worldwide (March 12, 2025). The CHIPS Act is under review, creating uncertainty for semiconductor investments. IRA credits are still in limbo. ?? A New Approach to Business Attraction One of the biggest takeaways? FDI cannot just be an extension of your current strategy. You need: ? A specialized approach for each market. The Netherlands, Switzerland, and Ireland are doing this well by tailoring their FDI strategies to their unique strengths. ? Extreme focus on target industries and locations—Manhattan, Kansas is a great example of a city punching above its weight in attraction. ? Better education for foreign investors—many still default to Silicon Valley without realizing better alternatives exist. ? Secondary markets have enormous potential and are not oversaturated like markets such as Germany, France, and other traditional targets. ?? Opportunities Amid the Uncertainty While some projects are on hold, opportunities remain in sectors that aren't directly impacted by tariffs and trade disputes. The key is understanding where companies are being forced to adapt—and positioning your community accordingly. If you're in economic development, what strategies are you seeing work in your community for attracting FDI in this environment?

  • A community's #economicresilience in the aftermath of natural disasters and other disruptions has become a top priority for company executives making #siteselection decisions. While some may dismiss economic resilience as an overplayed buzzword, building resilient communities, people, and businesses remains the core mission of economic developers. However, prioritizing and building the necessary #infrastructure improvements can be challenging.
