?? Sandi Toksvig is working to put women’s stories on the map, and redress the gaps in female history and representation. ?? One of these stories is of Mariam al Astrulabi or Al-?Ijliyyah from the Islamic Golden Age. Her astrolabes were an essential tool for astronomy, proving especially useful in the Muslim world when determining the dates of Ramadan. This is a snippet of a lecture for the Darwin College, University of Cambridge lecture series. Women in business aren’t newcomers – they’re part of a long legacy ?? International Women's Day (IWD) originated in 1908 with demands for better working conditions. Women marched in New York City and Chicago demanding shorter hours, better pay, their own union, and full suffrage. But much further back, in 18th-century England, women ran a wide range of businesses – like Elizabeth Baring, who co-founded Baring’s Bank, and Jane Hogarth (wife to artist William), who ran a print business for 25 years. To help ‘Accelerate Action’, this year’s IWD theme, Professor Amy Erickson from the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge busts some harmful myths about the history of women’s work, especially entrepreneurship. She hopes that businesswomen today will embrace the fact that they are, in fact, “inheritors of a long line” of female entrepreneurship. The 2024 funding landscape for neurotechnology has been marked by significant investments and advancements, with notable implications for the UK market. Check out the report below ?
?? ANNOUNCEMENT: Our ???????? ?????????????????? ?????????????? ???????????????? ???????????? is Now Live! ?? (Link In Comments) ?? ?? After 12 months of tracking over 2,000 market developments in our Substack followed by 10 weeks of cleanup, enrichment, and analysis, we're thrilled to share this original?report?covering $2.3 Billion invested across 129 deals in 2024. Some highlights and takeaways: ?? We might be on track to top $4b in 2025 based on prior years' data and some back of napkin CAGR ?? 7 companies topped $100m in funding last year: Blackrock Neurotech, INSIGHTEC, Mainstay Medical, Precision Neuroscience, and Amber Therapeutics Nalu Medical, Inc., Openwater, and ONWARD Medical ?? 6 companies raised over $50m: SPR Neuronetics, Inc., ShiraTronics, Inc., Omniscient Neurotechnology (o8t), Cala Health, & INBRAIN Neuroelectronics. ?? $400m was invested into 27 Series A rounds: $303m went to 7 implanted devices (2 brain, 3 peripheral nerve, 2 spinal cord) and $189m went to 20 non-implanted approaches. Excluding Amber Therapeutics’ $100m round, the average size of seris A rounds was $12m. ?? 63 seed deals reflect $132m of investments, almost $2.1m on average. Check out the report in the comment below for additional data and plenty of notes on methodology. Paid subscribers to Neurotech Futures will also have access to charts and analysis covering Timeline,?Breakdown by Category,?Markets,?Implanted vs Nonimplanted devices, Global?Geography, and?Broader Context. Lastly, here is our editor-in-chief Naveen Rao on why this analysis is important: As government funding for frontier R&D changes, the financial capital required to start, build, and grow new ventures?is a crucial factor and key bottleneck in commercial translation. Funding thus represents a?key vital sign?for the health of the field. It's my hope that this analysis advances innovation in three ways: ?? 1) Help investors and LPs refine their thesis to help attract more capital to the field ?? 2) Provide founders and executive teams with additional context on positioning, timing, and competition ?? 3) Guide students and professionals in navigating career transitions, i.e. finding companies or sectors that are better capitalized to hire new positions." #neurotech #braincomputerinterface #BCI #neuromodulation #investing #startups #meddevice #FDA #venturecapital #ultrasound #
