Caltrans District 1, one of the state’s northernmost maintenance crews now has a new and modernized facility helping them respond to emergencies 24/7 along U.S. 199, enhancing travel through this vital corridor adjacent to the picturesque, wild and scenic Smith River. The new Idlewild Maintenance Station features a 1,890-square-foot ADA-accessible maintenance office and crew room, along with a 484-square-foot fire pump house to support emergency response and fire protection. The spot has been upgraded with improved water storage for firefighting, new pathways and parking that meet ADA standards, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Other upsides include upgraded water, electrical and security systems, a new backup power generator for reliability, and improved pavement, parking, and fencing. It’s also built to better withstand seismic activity. These investments ensure that maintenance crews have the resources they need to keep U.S. 199 safe and well-maintained in all conditions.
