Did you know that concrete naturally sucks CO2 from the air? It happens through a process called CARBONATION. Carbonation is a chemical reaction that naturally occurs when concrete is exposed to CO2 in the air over the service life of a concrete structure. Carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air reacts with the cement hydrates in concrete to form calcium carbonate. When this happens, the reaction is irreversible, meaning that once the cement hydrates react to form calcium carbonate, the CO2 is permanently sequestered in the concrete. Why does this matter? Carbonation matters because it allows concrete to act as a carbon sink, partially offsetting the CO2 emissions generated during cement manufacturing. This sequestration can reduce the overall carbon footprint of concrete structures. By integrating carbonation into carbon accounting & Life Cycle Analysis practices, we can better understand and optimize this offset, ultimately contributing to more sustainable construction practices. https://lnkd.in/gAWeQ2g6

Researchers at the @MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub–Hessam Azarijafari, Ipek Bensu Manav and Andrew Laurent are calling on the @US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to adjust their new Low Carbon Label program to account for concrete’s life cycle benefits. Similar to the FDA’s nutrition labels, these EPA labels must tell the whole story of the products we are consuming in our construction diet. A recent piece in Real Clear Energy highlights the flaws in the current program. Chief among these is EPA’s failure to consider a full product lifecycle, and choosing a production-only standard. This approach will exclude many concrete products from the label and elevate products that might have higher emissions outputs over the long run. If we’re discussing “better for you” construction materials, concrete must be in the mix. Across its lifecycle concrete is more sustainable than most alternatives, thanks to its superior durability, material efficiency, recyclability and carbonation post-construction. As the authors note, “There is no doubt EPA’s labeling program is a critical step toward a more sustainable built environment. But to best aid federal purchasing decisions, EPA must move from labels focusing only on production to labels encompassing the whole product life. This is much like shifting from “Low Carb” labels to more encompassing Nutrition Facts. In their new op-ed in RealClearEnergy, Hessam AzariJafari, Ipek Bensu Manav, and Andrew Laurent explain that while the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s new low-carbon labels for construction materials are an important step forward, they must account for emissions beyond production to best aid purchasing decisions. The authors propose that the EPA use life cycle assessment tools to generate actionable emissions ranges that account for context and climate, and also expand the range of materials covered under the labeling program.
