Calliope Networks was the subject of discussion in the Creator Upload Podcast from Tubefilter. Lauren Schnipper and Joshua Cohen shared a good discussion about Calliope's "License to Scrape". Great insights and ideas. Had I been a guest on the podcast, I would have commented that one of the keys here is to create the foundation for the licensing of "publicly available" content now, so that when the AI/copyright court cases reject "fair use" arguments, there will be a simple and effective licensing solution ready to use. The recent deal between Lionsgate and Runway has generated a ton of buzz around Hollywood, and based on several conversations, it is often being misconstrued as a big data licensing deal. From everything I have read, it is not. Audrey Schomer at Variety has written the best article I have seen about the deal. She writes in part: ". . . the Lionsgate-Runway deal is not a data licensing deal. The deal also doesn’t mean that Lionsgate data is being used to train any of Runway’s own general video models, such as Gen-3, that support its tools made accessible for Runway’s other users. . . . [T]he deal is structured as a partnership. Lionsgate is giving Runway access to some of its film and TV archives in order to create a jointly managed custom model that only Lionsgate and its filmmakers, directors or other creatives can exclusively use." Promising blog post from Amjad Hanif at YouTube last week reiterating that scraping by AI companies (or anyone) is against their Terms of Service. And they foreshadow some new tools that will give content creators more control in the future. Seems very positive. Excited to learn more. "When it comes to other parties, such as those who may try to scrape YouTube content, we’ve been clear that accessing creator content in unauthorized ways violates our?Terms of Service?and undermines the value we provide back to creators in exchange for their work. We’ll continue to employ measures to ensure that third parties respect these terms, including ongoing investments in the systems that detect and prevent unauthorized access, up to and including blocking access from those who scrape. . . . [W]e're developing new ways to give YouTube creators choice over how third parties might use their content on our platform. We'll have more to share later this year."
