Happy Veterans Day!
In honor of Veterans Day I’m sharing an oldie but a goodie of my favorite veteran and me. This is my husband at his second to last promotion ceremony- he retired as a Colonel from the Army in 2023. Military service experience is as diverse as each veteran’s story and yet the thread of service and commitment runs through. Thank you to all who have served and thank you to the families, friends, and coworkers who support their service as well!
As I start the week, my mind is on the power of making connections. Two years ago, I did not know Reggie Jeffries, M.A., PCC or Dr. Mira Brancu, and Sarah Porter, PhD and I had a fond but sporadic relationship due to the effect of distance and time. And today, we've wrapped up two weeks of sweeping our communities asking for your support for our program on the SXSW PanelPicker. This is amazing to me! My journey into a new career as a business owner, consulting psychologist, and coach has been full of newness and challenge. But it's also been an opportunity to forge new ties and strengthen existing relationships. There's of course much more to effective leadership, but the center for me is connection to others. I need relationships all along the spectrum- from weak ties to deeply-known loved ones. So thank you to my community and to my colleagues for the experience of connection. (And we'll keep you posted on the outcomes of our proposal!)

This study presents some bracing evidence of the absolute importance of engaging with your employees proactively, and with a real goal of understanding how they are doing in their role. Here's a quote: "Yet, 70% of preventable leavers reported actions more directly related to how they are managed daily such as creating more positive personal interactions with their manager (21%), addressing frustrating organizational issues (13%), creating opportunities for career advancement (11%) or improving staffing or workload concerns (9%)." People leaders need the skills to do this part of the job- and if they don't have those skills, then the organization is missing a chance to impact turnover.
