Today, port executives from across California met in Sacramento for CAPA's annual day of advocacy, Ports Day 2025, advocating for policies that will ensure California remains the nation’s leading trade gateway. Under the theme, “Strengthening California’s Future,” port leaders advocated for continued investments in infrastructure and policies that will enhance resiliency in the global supply chain. “Our ports are the backbone of California’s economy,” said CAPA President and Executive Director of the Port of Redwood City Kristine Zortman. “Our state must continue to invest in infrastructure and environmental initiatives that will allow each of California’s ports to thrive.” California State Transportation Agency Secretary Toks Omishakin echoed this sentiment, “California’s ports continue to lead the charge in building a resilient, innovative and sustainable trade network. With a focus on people, planet and performance, Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka outlined the Port’s agenda for the coming year to a record 640 attendees at the Port's 10th annual State of the Port event. ? After acknowledging ongoing wildfire recovery and relief efforts currently underway across Los Angeles, Seroka pointed out an array of environmental, community and business successes, including finishing 2024 by processing more than 10.3 million container units. That reflects nearly 20% increase over 2023, and the second-best year in the 117-year history of the Port. https://lnkd.in/gMKTwYeB?

Last Thursday, the Port of Long Beach highlighted the success of its 2005 Green Port Policy. The policy resulted in a range of sustainability initiatives that culminated in a cleaner harbor, industry-leading green building practices and most notably, air quality improvements resulting from reductions in emissions. So far, diesel emissions are down 92%, nitrogen oxides by 71%, sulfur oxides by 98% and greenhouse gases by 17% since 2005. Representatives from the California State Lands Commission and the ports of Long Beach and Humboldt ceremonially?signed a memorandum of understanding?during the State of the Port, securing an agreement to collaborate on critical port infrastructure upgrades needed to support offshore wind projects statewide. Today, the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA) applauded the Environmental Protection Agency and Administrator Michael Regan on the agency’s investment of more than $1 billion in the California ports through the Clean Ports Program. This investment from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Ports Program will help fund projects across seven of the state’s ports to build zero-emission (ze) port infrastructure and implement climate and air quality management plans. “Time and time again, California ports have proven their commitment and dedication to fighting climate change by implementing unparalleled environmental initiatives,” said CAPA President Kristine Zortman. “We applaud the EPA for this historic investment that will reduce emissions and improve air quality across the global supply chain.” https://lnkd.in/g2SB_fyK

The Port of Los Angeles has been awarded an unprecedented $412 million grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Clean Ports Program to support the zero-emission (ZE) transition at the nation’s busiest trade gateway. The Port and its private sector partners will match the EPA grant with an additional $236 million, bringing the total new investment in ZE programs at the Port of Los Angeles to $644 million. https://lnkd.in/gBgMsMq8

This week, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Shanghai Green Shipping Corridor Partnership released a report documenting the significant progress made over the past year to reduce carbon emissions. California ports have inked numerous different agreements with ports throughout the Asia-Pacific region to establish green shipping corridors in China, Japan, Vietnam, and Singapore.
