Pulp non-fiction ?? When life gives you leftover grape skins, make organic compost! Or at least that’s what they say at the certified sustainable NINER WINE ESTATES, LLC in Paso Robles… After the grapes have been pressed, wineries are left with the skins and stems, known as pomace – and why should all that natural goodness go to waste? The com-post is spread in the vine-yard for a microbial boost. ?? NINER WINE ESTATES, LLC ? #CaliforniaWines #WinesOnAMission

All fantastic and family-owned wineries of California to look out for, spanning notable North Coast areas of Napa Valley, Sonoma and Lake County, down to the Central Coast hotspots of Santa Babara and Paso Robles. A winery powered by the sun? Now that’s a bright idea! ?? We all have a carbon footprint, and wine is no different, which is why vintners are on a mission to find greener energy sources, including making good use of all that California sunshine… Silver Oak Cellars covered the roof of its Alexander Valley winery in 2,595 solar panels, which produce more energy than it consumes, 105% to be exact! Plus it’s made from local recycled materials, and even has its own electric vehicle charging station. #CaliforniaWines #WinesOnMission

Really great to meet and taste alongside the judges of this years Wine Merchant California Collection. Over 130 California wines were tasted by seven independent merchants from across the UK yesterday to come up with their Top 50 wines which were felt to offer a great combination of taste, quality and value for money. Looking forward to reading the results which will be released in The Wine Merchant in the next couple of months!

Sustainability goes beyond the vineyards, it’s about the people behind the wines. ?? It takes over 400,000 pairs of hands to support California’s wine industry, from the picking crews and cellar hands, to the bottling line and tasting room staff. Built by five generations of farmers and certified sustainable, McManis Family Vineyards believes in treating their team like family, fostering a supportive community for the long term. The average team member has been there for over 14 years, and cellar master Claudio Godinez started in 1988! ?? McManis Family Vineyards ? #CaliforniaWines #WinesOnAMission

What is sustainability in wine? ?? From vine to glass, sustainability shapes every stage of the journey, guided by the “3 Es” for environmental, economic and socially equitable practices. Did you know that 90% of California wine is crafted by a certified sustainable winery? Look out for a certification logo on the label: Certified Sustainable California, or a regional program like Napa Green, Lodi Rules, or Sustainability in Practice. Family-owned J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines was among the first to introduce sustainable practices across their estates in Paso Robles, Monterey, and Napa Valley. From protecting wildlife and saving water in the vineyards, to using solar power, recycled packaging, and partnering with local charities and education programs — every decision is made with sustainability in mind. ?? Nature’s pest control ?? Grapes are delicious, and we’re not the only ones who think so. So how do winegrowers stop various insects and animals from eating their crop, using sustainable methods? Through integrated pest management, California winegrowers are looking to ecosystem-based methods, such as introducing natural predators and deterrents to keep critters at bay. ?? Aided by its keen sense of sight and swift flight, a family of barn owls can consume up to 3,500 rodents per year! ?? Frey Vineyards Winery ? #CaliforniaWines #WinesOnAMission
