Rodney Slater made history as the first Black Director of the Federal Highway Administration. He later continued his exceptional service as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Slater is responsible for many significant, bipartisan transportation projects including the Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century. ?#BlackHistoryMonth

When he was appointed U.S. Secretary of Transportation in 1975, William Thaddeus Coleman, Jr. (1920-2017) made history as the first-ever Black person appointed to this role. His appointment ensured Black voices were represented in transportation. Coleman was pivotal in the creation of the first National Transportation Policy in the U.S. and championed safety in the transportation sector.?The U.S. Department of Transportation Headquarters is named after him, as he is a foundational part of our nation’s transportation history. ?#BlackHistoryMonth

Today, port executives from across California met in Sacramento for CAPA's annual day of advocacy, Ports Day 2025, advocating for policies that will ensure California remains the nation’s leading trade gateway. Under the theme, “Strengthening California’s Future,” port leaders advocated for continued investments in infrastructure and policies that will enhance resiliency in the global supply chain. “Our ports are the backbone of California’s economy,” said CAPA President and Executive Director of the Port of Redwood City Kristine Zortman. “Our state must continue to invest in infrastructure and environmental initiatives that will allow each of California’s ports to thrive.” California State Transportation Agency Secretary Toks Omishakin echoed this sentiment, “California’s ports continue to lead the charge in building a resilient, innovative and sustainable trade network. Today we recognize Arcola Philpott (1913-1991), the first Black person to work for the Los Angeles Railway as a streetcar operator. Unprecedented at the time, Philpott led the way for Black women and men to work in the operating space. Philpott has left a legacy of strength and bravery, and her trailblazing nature forged a critical path for African Americans to enter the railway sector and be an essential part of the influence transportation has on society.?#BlackHistoryMonth

It's an honor to feature Frederick McKinley “Casey” Jones, a Black inventor who designed the first transportable refrigeration unit. His invention was critical during World War II, as it protected the transport of medicine, blood and food. In 1991, he was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Technology, becoming the first Black inventor to ever receive this recognition. A pioneer in mobile refrigeration, Jones opened the doors for transportation to become even more essential in society. #BlackHistoryMonth
