The California State Library empowers the people of the nation's most diverse and populous state.

关于我们

The California State Library empowers the people of the nation's most diverse and populous state by: * Providing credible information services to all Californians, especially those in state government and the Legislature, libraries, academia, and persons with disabilities; * Leading and establishing partnerships with California libraries through funding, program development, and support; * Preserving and providing access to California’s unique history to enrich the lives of current and future generations. Established in 1850, the California State Library is the oldest continuously operated public library in the American West and is the central reference and research library for state government and the Legislature. The library collection includes more than 4 million titles, 6,000 maps, and 250,000 photographs. It has an extensive collection of documents from and about the state’s rich history and is one of the major genealogical reference libraries on the West Coast. It also holds significant collections from Mexico, the United Kingdom and Europe, with manuscripts dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The State Library is both a State and Federal Depository Library, providing free and open access to government information, and is a U.S. Patent and Trademark Resource Center. It is home to the Bernard E. Witkin State Law Library and the Braille and Talking Book Library. It also directs state and federal funds to support local public libraries and statewide library programs and services.

Choose Your Adventure is back! Choose Your Adventure is a collaborative storytelling activity using real history and materials from the CA History collection of the CA State Library. Loosely inspired by tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, Choose Your Adventure is both fun and educational. All you need to participate: a 20-sided die (which we provide), a little bit of history (also provided by us), and your imagination! This activity is available Wednesdays in December (excluding the 25th) at 2-3:30PM. Sign up for a timeslot on your own to meet new people or attend as a group! To learn more, visit our Events Calendar at https://lnkd.in/gpKPbGQ5

In honor of #InternationalGamesmonth, why not try some game-based learning activities in your library or classroom? Maybe Choose Your Adventure? This educational programming is a game-based learning activity utilizing real history and materials from the California History collection and collaborative storytelling. The public may have seen this in action at previous Museum Days and Archives Crawls. Librarians and other educators often ask how they can run this programming themselves. We can now point them to the Choose Your Adventure webpage! On it, you'll find steps for adventure creation as well as guides for running pre-made adventures. The guide for the Central Valley Adventure (aka combating the octopus) is now up with the other guides coming soon. ? https://lnkd.in/gzthn7St

Join CalMatters Deputy Editor Adam Ashton and Homelessness Reporter Marisa Kendall for an in-depth conversation about encampment sweeps across the state and what it means. Tuesday, November 19, 2024 | 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Register at https://lnkd.in/gU-nZy63 In June, the Supreme Court gave cities in California and beyond more power to crack down on homeless encampments. Gov. Gavin Newsom has responded with demands of sweeps. Cities and counties struggle to clear encampments and find a place for those living on the street to stay.

A recent large request sent the California Research Bureau on an exploration of California’s population density data, yielding some insights that might be useful to the larger policymaking community. Using that data, the California Research Bureau has developed a new tool to help policymakers better understand California’s population density distribution, including data by legislative district and county. Read our latest CRB Quick Hit, describing the tool and our findings here: https://lnkd.in/g3AGmXWJ Or access the tool here: https://lnkd.in/gYYJi4u9

In early October, the first time in 100 years, salmon were observed swimming past the sites of former dams as they migrated from the ocean into the Klamath River. This was made possible by the removal of dams that previously blocked salmon from completing their historic migration. Interested in learning more? Join the California History Section for their next Speaker Series virtual talk, Toward a Decolonial Future: Klamath River Temporary Dams with Dr. Brittani Orona on Wednesday, November 13 at 4PM. With the four dams removed, this talk will explore the relationship of the lower Klamath River and how Hupa, Yurok, and Karuk story and ceremony intertwine on the Basin to build a new, decolonial future for the river itself. The event is free but requires registration. For more information and to register, visit https://lnkd.in/gs5APN6Y?.
