In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we reflect on the legacy of Vana Parrish-Lawson, Kashaya Pomo educator and author of Kashaya Pomo Plants. This digitized U-matic footage captures Vana sharing the ancestral knowledge passed down from her parents, Sidney and Essie Parrish, revered Kashaya Pomo elders. Through YA-KA-AMA INDIAN EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT, Vana’s teachings live on, preserving Native traditions and the deep connection to the land for future generations. Did you stay until the very end of this year’s Sacramento Archives Crawl? ?????? We hope you stopped by our table and caught a few minutes of our screening of a 1985 Sacramento Kings game. But there’s a chance you missed a rare, behind-the-scenes moment—sometimes, at the end of a tape, you’ll find footage that wasn’t meant for public eyes. As archivists, we’re often the ones who stumble upon them. After the game footage ends, a few fleeting seconds reveal what seems to be a wardrobe assistant at a fitting, followed by a quick clip of a model showing off the Kings’ new jerseys. A huge thank you to the Sacramento Archives Crawl committee for another fantastic year, and to the Sacramento Public Library for providing the space to share this piece of sports history. From the fields to the streets, a movement for dignity unfolds as the UFW takes on Gallo Winery, demanding justice and accountability from the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board.
