California ReLeaf’s mission is to empower grassroots efforts and build strategic partnerships that preserve, protect, and enhance California’s urban and community forests. Since 1989, California ReLeaf has worked to promote alliances among community-based groups, individuals, industry, and public agencies, encouraging each to contribute to the livability of our cities, public health, and environmental protection by planting and caring for trees. Urban and community forests consist of the trees and vegetation where people live and work, including the trees in yards and along residential streets, in parking lots, along commercial thoroughfares, on school grounds, and in parks and open spaces. With more than 94% of Californians living in an urban area, urban forests are integral to the health and well-being of our communities. California ReLeaf is the only entity that serves all of the community-based urban and community forestry organizations in the state. Our work with local organizations allows us to efficiently gather and disseminate information and resources, while also having a “big picture” understanding of trends, needs, or opportunities. Our leadership and support enable even small grassroots organizations to implement tree planting, tree care, and environmental education projects and programs that improve the neighborhoods, public places, and landscapes of California’s urban and suburban communities.

Congrats to our California Arbor Week grantee, Priceless Pets Ranch and Learning Center, who completed their tree-planting grant project generously sponsored by Edison International. Priceless Pets Ranch and Learning Center (PPRLC) is a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter and demonstration farm with an education center for the San Bernardino County community. Its mission is to care for its farm and ranch animals, provide community education about animals and animal care, and educate the community about the importance of environmental stewardship and its role in providing healthy places for people and animals. PPRLC hosts community events, educational camps, and field trips for thousands of San Bernardino County residents throughout the year. With Arbor Week grant funding, PPRLC hosted an Earth Day event with family-friendly activities related to environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and animal care. Community members helped plant trees while learning about the benefits they would provide to visitors to the ranch and the animals on the property. PPRLC chose to plant large 36 and 45-gallon trees, which, although being more challenging to transport and plant, are now providing immediate shade to visitors, including school children, summer camp students, and the many farm animals on site. Tree Cheers to our grantee PPRLC, and big thanks to our grant sponsor, Edison International, as well as the ongoing support we receive from California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and the USDA Forest Service, who help make these small grants possible!
