September is California Pedestrian Safety Month. With one out of every four people killed walking on California roads, pedestrians are experiencing unsafe conditions that put lives at risk. The OTS and Caltrans kicked off the 'Protect Our Pedestrians. Protect Our Cyclists.' campaign that calls on drivers to slow down, look out for people walking and riding, and drive like it is their friend, family member, or colleague walking or riding on paths and roads. Today officially kicks off the “Better Slow Than Sorry” statewide initiative calling on drivers to slow down, follow the speed limit and save lives. With 32% of traffic deaths in California caused by speeding and 1,403 people killed in speeding-related crashes in 2022 alone, the campaign is a way to educate Californians about the dangers of speeding and change driver behavior. We're excited to share that the OTS hosted its first Traffic Safety Law Enforcement Forum in the Bay Area on June 11-12! This event brought together over 260 dedicated law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, toxicologists, and researchers to discuss the biggest traffic safety challenges and explore the best solutions. ?? A special shoutout to the 14 outstanding officers recognized by the OTS and the NHTSA for their incredible work in taking suspected impaired drivers off California roads. Leave the speed to the professionals. The OTS and Caltrans hosted a meet and greet with NASCAR driver Ross Chastain last week ahead of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.
