September is California Pedestrian Safety Month. With one out of every four people killed walking on California roads, pedestrians are experiencing unsafe conditions that put lives at risk. Today officially kicks off the “Better Slow Than Sorry” statewide initiative calling on drivers to slow down, follow the speed limit and save lives. With 32% of traffic deaths in California caused by speeding and 1,403 people killed in speeding-related crashes in 2022 alone, the campaign is a way to educate Californians about the dangers of speeding and change driver behavior. We're excited to share that the OTS hosted its first Traffic Safety Law Enforcement Forum in the Bay Area on June 11-12! This event brought together over 260 dedicated law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, toxicologists, and researchers to discuss the biggest traffic safety challenges and explore the best solutions. ?? A special shoutout to the 14 outstanding officers recognized by the OTS and the NHTSA for their incredible work in taking suspected impaired drivers off California roads. Leave the speed to the professionals. The OTS and Caltrans hosted a meet and greet with NASCAR driver Ross Chastain last week ahead of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. The OTS joined forces with the California New Motor Vehicle Board, National Safety Council, California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA), and Automobile Club of Southern California (AAA) this week to educate the public about the free tools available to check the recall status on vehicles and have any open recalls fixed as soon as possible. Visit CheckToProtect.org and enter your license plate number or vehicle identification number. In just seconds, you will know about any open recalls. It's that easy! Yet there are still roughly 700,000 registered vehicles in California with defective, potentially deadly, Takata airbags nearly 10 years after the largest safety recall in automotive history. In February, the California Department of Motor Vehicles started including vehicle safety recall information on vehicle registration renewal notices for vehicles with open recalls. Later this month, the DMV will also start issuing notices to the last known registered owners of vehicles on file with Takata airbag recalls that have not been fixed. The notice provides resources for scheduling a free repair and information on how to check for any open vehicle recalls. If you receive this recall notice or one from your vehicle's manufacturer, do not ignore it. This is not junk mail!
