The ISO is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that operates the majority of California's wholesale power grid.
关于我们
The California Independent System Operator (ISO) manages the flow of electricity across the high-voltage, long-distance power lines that make up 80 percent of California's power grid. We safeguard the economy and well-being of 30 million Californians by "keeping the lights on" 24/7. As the impartial grid operator, the California ISO opens access to the wholesale power market that is designed to diversify resources and lower prices. It also grants equal access to 25,865 circuit-miles of power lines and reduces barriers to diverse resources competing to bring power to customers. The California ISO's function is often compared to that of air traffic controllers. It would be grossly unfair for air traffic controllers to represent one airline and profit from allowing that company's planes to go through before others. In the same way, the California ISO operates independently—managing the electron traffic on a power grid we do not own—making sure electricity is safely delivered to utilities and consumers on time and reliably.

#ESMEvents Last week the ESM second year cohort had the opportunity to visit and tour California Independent System Operator (CAISO) California ISO! Organized by professor Dr. Jonathan Lee. The students had a great experience and CAISO enjoyed hosting throughout the tour visit. The ESM program values expanding learning opportunities by coordinating trips to well known organizations that contribute to the energy industry! #CAISO #LearningOpportunities #Changetheworldfromhere

Last Friday, my classmates and I from the MS in Energy Systems Management - University of San Francisco Class of 2025 had the incredible opportunity to tour the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). We got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how CAISO keeps California’s lights on 24/7, 365 days a year, balances the grid, and integrates renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and battery storage. Seeing the control room in action was absolutely fascinating! Our professor, Jonathan Lee also took the opportunity to reinforce key concepts we’ve been learning in class, making the experience even more impactful. Big thanks to the CAISO team for hosting us and sharing invaluable insights about grid management and the future of sustainable energy. It was truly an eye-opening experience for all of us aspiring energy professionals.
