A state of open mind.

关于我们

For almost 50 years, California Humanities has helped give voice to voices seldom heard. Through grants and special programs that reach into every corner of our state, we help tell the stories of California. Your stories. California Humanities (formerly Cal Humanities and The California Council for the Humanities) connects Californians to ideas and one another in order to understand our shared heritage and diverse cultures, inspire civic participation, and shape our future. California Humanities, a nonprofit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, promotes the humanities—focused on ideas, conversation and learning—as relevant, meaningful ways to understand the human condition and connect us to each other in order to help strengthen California. California Humanities has provided grants and programs across the state since 1975. To learn more, visit calhum.org.

We're excited to announce that our intensive professional development experience for public library professionals, Library Innovation Lab, is now accepting applications for the 2025 cohort! Over the course of one year, ten librarians, with support from experienced mentors and peers, meet to learn more about the immigrants in their communities and to design new events to engage these communities through public humanities programs. And for 2025, thanks to support from Institute of Museum and Library Services and in partnership with Califa Group, California Humanities is expanding this program nationally, with applicants now welcome from other states. President and CEO at James B. McClatchy Foundation

Happy The James B. McClatchy Foundation was a co-host to this curated panel featuring some brilliant thought leaders in voter engagement and disillusionment- and what it takes to connect with voters from communities of color, and that’s the long view, off election cycles, as well as recognition of historic harm our country has made with broken promises, and state and federal election laws that both prevent and facilitate active engagement. JBMF began our #democracy work way before the election spirals and believes it takes support to #grassroots leaders and investment in quality fact based #localnews- that’s our long game ?? California Humanities as quarterback and CapRadio as runningback - we got democracy covered!

California Humanities was proud to support this program with History San José, part of our Civics and Humanities Middle Grades grant program. In programs like these, we see a powerful opportunity to cultivate the skills and habits young people need to actively engage in civic life through their school years and into the future. cc Kirsten Vega

Happy International Podcast Day! We're celebrating by highlighting one of our most popular education programs and the exceptional students who took part in launching their very own podcasts earlier this year! Do You Know the Way to San José? is a partnership between History San José and the Quimby Oak Middle School's Lobo School of Innovation. This year, this project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a partner of the NEH. The intent is to get middle schoolers to critically examine their local histories and advocate for stories that celebrate the diverse cultural, agricultural, and technological achievements and history of San José, California. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gB6jKqPN On June 6th between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, Lobo School of Innovation students launched their podcasts throughout History Park in an effort to tell untold narratives. 7th graders advocated for histories of the past 75 years while 8th graders showcased stories of San Jose directly after statehood. Additionally, History San José inaugurated two interactive plaques based on last year’s projects. Local artist Nicholas Jimenez took students' projects and built two models, which were installed in History Park over the summer. One celebrates the life and accomplishments of former Supervisor Ken Yeager. The other plaque tells the story of the Gurdwara. All photos were provided by the Lobo School of Innovation at Quimby Oak Middle School. History San José (HSJ) is a premier resource for educators when it comes to Silicon Valley history and heritage. Its mission is to preserve and enrich the cultural heritage of San José and the Santa Clara Valley through research, collections, partnerships, educational programs, and events. The organization provides educational opportunities both on HSJ sites and virtually that promote critical thinking and engage students and visitors in interactive learning. Lobo School of Innovation (LSI) is an innovative project-based learning program partnered with the New Tech Network. It is a public middle school in the Evergreen School District and is one of the instructional choices available to Quimby Oak Middle School students. It creates rigorous, authentic projects that teach students to adapt and engage in the world around them. LSI students apply their knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems in their communities. #EducationPrograms #InternationalPodcastDay #HistorySanJose #QuimbyOakMiddleSchool #CaliforniaHumanities #NEHPartner #SiliconValleyHistory #MiddleSchoolers #ProjectBasedLearning #LocalHistories
