California voters have rejected Proposition 32, the minimum wage initiative on the November ballot. As a result, California's minimum wage will increase to $16.50 on January 1 for all employers per current law that allows for wage increases due to inflation. Furthermore, many cities have local ordinances that set higher minimum wages, with these increases typically taking effect in January or July each year. Employers must pay the local minimum wage if it is higher than California’s minimum wage.
