?? ?? Today in San Diego I joined a milestone in wildfire preparedness, celebrating the completion of the first home retrofitted as part of our home hardening financial assistance retrofit program. This effort is part of California’s larger effort of wildfire resiliency. The California Wildfire Mitigation Program (CWMP), a joint powers authority between the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), was established to lead a pilot initiative that funds home hardening retrofits and defensible space efforts that increase the survivability of communities during a wildfire. While this home was the first in San Diego, and the 12th statewide, the pilot program is actively working with 6 communities to harden upwards of 2,500 homes. Revitalizing underused retail spaces like empty shopping centers and parking lots could be key to help alleviate our housing crisis. By turning these sites into vibrant, mixed-use communities with housing, retail, and recreation, we can reduce development costs and make use of existing infrastructure. Cities like Brea, Santa Ana, and Laguna Hills are already leading the way.????? #OrangeCounty #HousingCrisis #InfillDevelopment #SmartGrowth | Adam Wood, Building Industry Association of Southern California via The Orange County Register https://lnkd.in/gznXGbjA

Thank you to the great Kevin Ervin Kelley, AIA for sharing the stage both in June at the California Building Industry Association and last week on a follow up webinar sponsored by the CBIA. We have gone from an age rich in relationships and poor in knowledge to an age rich in knowledge and poor in relationships. It's amazing how much we both feel this social poverty all around us and work on ways to alleviate it. We come to this challenge from completely different backgrounds - I have mostly worked in #peacebuilding and you in #retail - and yet land together with similar worldviews. While I work on #neighborhoods, you work on physical locations. In both cases, we are trying to bolster social connectivity and emotional attachments to place. There is a lot to gain by learning from your ideas about bonfire moments and designing to promote prosocial outcomes. The more our places bring us together, the more we can address our social challenges. I highly recommend your book Irreplaceable: How to Create Extraordinary Places That Bring People Together. It has ideas even for those far from retail. This was a great conversation, facilitated by Greg Fuson. One of my best because of the interaction and synthesis we created. I can share it with anyone who wants to delve deeper into these ideas. Please just message. #loneliness #inequality #Placemaking PlacemakingX Placemaking Education

Today the #California #Assembly Select Committee on #Permitting Reform held an Informational Hearing in Los Angeles. The focus of the hearing was on the permitting to facilitate #infill #housing and sustainable transportation. Ahead of the hearing we had the opportunity to do a boots on the ground tour, highlighting these types of investments. Great coordination with the Los Angeles County Business Federation - BizFed! I’m encouraged to see effort from the legislature to streamline housing. I hope that can be extended to all housing types, including single family #construction and greenfield development. Thank you to Select Committee Chair, Assemblymember Buffy Wicks for leading this dialogue! Mike Manville, the Department Chair on Housing, from the UCLA Luskin School was the MOST impressive speaker on the topic of housing #affordability. In his words: “We have a serious problem that has caused insufficient housing supply. The solution to that problem is to make it easier to build housing of all kinds. Any thing that gets layered on top of an effort to make it easier to build housing risks undermining our ability to get under the biggest root cause of the housing crisis.” This should not be a surprise to anybody. His comments are simple, truthful and academically researched. More footage to come on his opening remarks. #louderforthepeopleintheback
