Meet Tiega Varlack - Secretary! What inspired you to pursue a career in law? Perry Mason reruns and always having a comeback as a kid. Traditional values and a fear of poverty also guided me toward law. Where do you work and what is your role? I’m the CEO of Varlack Legal Services in Hayward where I’m the chief problem solver, head crybaby, and trial warrior. What do you like most about being an attorney? Having the ability to make change and use my voice, especially in court. Advocating for political causes is also a passion of mine. What inspired you to join the CABL? Seeing so many incredible attorneys made me feel honored to be among the 2% of Black lawyers in CA. After my first convention in 2011, I was hooked! What is your favorite thing about being a CABL Board member? I appreciate the broad network of thought leaders who have become friends. What is something about you that fellow CABL members might be surprised to know? I’m originally from the East Coast and have now spent almost 20 years in CA! If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Learning to paint, especially with watercolors. What advice would you give to the next generation of lawyers? Apply yourself to every task. As a litigator, mistakes matter, so own them and strive to improve your craft.

I have been on the CABL Board of Directors for the past 8 years, and now have the privilege to lead the organization as its President. Meet Michele Anderson - Treasurer! What inspired you to pursue a career in law? I originally went into law to further my music career and fund my music video. Music eventually became my fallback. Where do you work and what is your role? I am a special prosecutor with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. I handle child pornography and molestation cases, OSHA violations, real estate mortgage fraud and consumer protection matters. What do you like most about being an attorney? The ability to help others and dispute resolution. What inspired you to join the CABL? Past President Melinda Murray encouraged me to join CABL and get involved with the legislative program for CABL. I love reviewing and writing legislation. What is your favorite thing about being a CABL Board member? Meeting lawyers that look like me and I can count on to have my back. What is something about you that fellow CABL members might be surprised to know? I was a ward of the Queen of England. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Fly a plane. I have met a few female pilots. What advice would you give to the next generation of lawyers? Love your practice area, and you'll never feel like you're at work — just pursuing your passion.

What has been your biggest challenge as a business owner? Raising capital. What are your goals for the business in the next few years? Scale our programs and securing a federal grant. Are there any exciting new projects or initiatives you are working on with your business? Supporting underrepresented students in environmental science and oceanography. How do you see your business being involved with the local community? Partnering with the County of San Diego to provide training and technical assistance to minority-owned businesses and nonprofits. What’s one interesting fact about your business that most people wouldn’t know? We support Haitian immigrants and the homeless through San Diego based partnerships. Since its inception, the California Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) has stood on the frontlines challenging racial inequities and championing causes impacting the Black community and other underserved communities throughout California and the nation. Over the next few critical months, we are committed to joining this fight through education and activation. We need you to join the fight with us! The past few days have served as a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together. The outpouring of support, and the record-breaking engagement within our communities demonstrate the extraordinary strength we possess when we unite. Together, we have shown the nation that our voices matter. The future of our democracy is in our hands. We cannot remain silent and let others decide our fate. Now is the time to step up, learn, and get involved. Your contribution matters-your time, resources, connections, and perspectives are all invaluable. So what can you do? 1. Get educated. Our fundamental rights are under threat. Understanding what’s at stake is crucial to protecting our freedoms. 2. Donate. Every dollar invested helps bridge the gap between a message delivered and a message truly heard within our communities. Your financial support is crucial. As an individual, you can contribute up to $3,300 per election. This important message is too powerful to fade into silence! 3. Get Active. Volunteer your time, host an event, and leverage your unique talents and resources to make a real difference. Tap into your networks to determine how you can contribute to the collective effort. Every action, no matter how small, can have a ripple effect within our communities. 4. Use your voice. Advocate fiercely for the causes you hold dear. Educate others and empower your peers to do the same. Your voice has power and can be a catalyst for change. 5. VOTE!! No matter what, you cannot stay at home! Your vote has power, and our country cannot afford to lose the power you hold. Our fight is more important now than ever before, and each of us has an obligation to ensure democracy wins! Let us continue the momentum created and harness the power we hold to shape a future we can all be proud of.
