Friday, August 16 at 10am PST Sixteen years ago when Corey Robinson and I opened Cali BBQ with Eric Olafsen, we had no “Grand Opening” ceremony. We were just happy to pass our final health inspection and turn the open sign on. Tomorrow, our Cali BBQ Media will be on site to document this special day for our family business. In 2008 the minimum wage in California was $8 per hour. In 2024 the minimum wage in California is now $16 per hour. In 2008 we sold a slow smoked pulled pork sandwich for less than $10. Our in store menu Cali BBQ today in 2024 lists the pulled pork sandwich at $15. Our delivery menu uses JUICER pricing to incrementally change the price between $12-$18. Change is inevitable. Everyone has a Orange Tree Story. ?????? What is an Orange Tree Story? Your Orange Tree story is a story with deep meaning for your family, your business, your brand. It is a story that you need to share more. It is a story of your why. It is a story that takes on bigger significance every time you share it. It is also a story that you probably have taken for granted and maybe even forgotten about. My Family Orange Tree Story - My Bulgarian grandfather and Bulgarian uncle really wanted a fruit tree and fountain on the property where we first opened our family restaurant in 1994. They planted a small orange tree and built a beautiful water fountain next to it. That tree slowly started to grow. Over the next fifteen years the breakfast business changed ownership several times until Corey Robinson and I took over in 2008 and started what would later be known as Cali BBQ. I met my Bulgarian would be bride in 2008 as well and took her out to our restaurant on of our first dates. I showed her the fountain and orange tree but didn’t place any significance on them. My grandfather passed away in December of 2008. A couple of years later a Chargers fan and Raiders fan decided to get into a fight during a Monday Night Football watch party and broke the water fountain beyond repair. My wife and I rebuilt another fountain to honor my grandfather. In 2020 we decided it was time to go all in on becoming the Amazon of BBQ in San Diego. We turned our back patio into our Master Smokehouse. During the planning phase we all agreed that we would have to remove the organge tree to accommodate the smokers. Everyone agreed except for my wife. She fought for Grandpa’s Organge Tree. She won. We won because of it. If you come to Spring Valley you can still see the perseverance of our family orange tree.
