Well, it’s been nearly two weeks since SynBioBeta, including a week of follow-up, and I figured it was time I got around to writing an update on observations and things of note, about this years’ show. Firstly, a huge thank you to the indefatigable John Cumbers and team for getting the #synbio #community together for another conference, this time at a new location—and a huge sign of the growing maturity of the conference. And it’s a terrific community. Also great to catch up with Ivan R. Jaubert. ?? The #Growlitariat: their catchcry is “we-can-grow-anything-and-everything” or “build-with-biology”. Great to meet Luc Harrigan at Caladan Bio modular bioreactors, and the folks at Biomason with their biolith tiles ???? #Bionauts: there were several panels related to #space and #astrobiology, led by the indomitable Elizabeth Reynolds at Starburst Aerospace, and their new #biotech program, focusing on “Engineering Biology for Space Settlement”, the “Space BioEconomy” and “Nourishing Life Beyond Earth” ?? #Culturetopians: there are a growing number of groups that are proliferating, not only the #STEM aspects of synbio (Nucleate and iGEM for example), but the community also promotes wellness and care—there were yoga sessions, a fun run and a women’s lunch! They’re like our own version of a #gliteratti ?? #bAIologists: if you didn’t know already, AI will feature bigly in #synbio in the coming decade, from #generativeAI, to #machinelearning, and #proteindesign ?? #Luckycountrians: this year there was a large official #Australian contingent present, led by Cauldron Ferm, the CSIRO and Main Sequence (great to finally talk to you in person Jason Whitfield). There were other Australians, a kind of unofficial contingent, and it was great to spend time with mates, Joseph McAuliffe, Damien Perriman, and to finally meet Alinta Furnell from Sydney-based startup, Synbiote (great panel on supply chains) and Claudia Moratti, PhD from Nourish Ingredients Special shoutout/Menton-in-dispatches to messrs (but not limited to): Tariq Warsi at Neogene Therapeutics; Khalid K. Alam, Ph.D. making biosensors at Stemloop, Inc.; Christopher Oakes making underwater tractors; Alec Brewer at Ourobio currently embarking on a raise; Aquanzo’s Stefanie Lobnig making aquaculture feed from #seamonkeys; the always enthusiastic Stephen Hubbard, and Marco Iandolino making the transition to his PhD program at University of California, Davis. Thanks to the dozens of startups that I met with—I looking forward to speaking with you all further in the coming weeks

Today we are excited to announce our $5 million seed round led by Twelve Below, with participation from Lerer Hippeau, Collaborative Fund, Wireframe Ventures, Factorial and Ritual Capital. We are thrilled to have such an experienced?group of investors in our corner and look forward to executing our vision for?Caladan Bio together. This round of capital?will allow us to continue our rapid hardware and software?development pace, grow our team and ship our first product line. Last?summer, Rob Jauquet and I embarked on a mission to build better bioreactors for synthetic biology companies. The industry is massively slowed down by the cost and complexity of running benchtop bioreactor experiments - costing companies in the space tens of millions to get each product to market. Our goal is to reduce this by an order of magnitude by first reducing cost of hardware/consumables, and second greatly increasing the live data coming from our bioreactors - streamlining analysis and enhancing decision making. We are excited to announce that next week we will be debuting our first product - The Caladan 250 - at SynBioBeta in San Jose. The Caladan 250 is a benchtop bioreactor system that fully automates fermentation and cell culture experiments. We have focused on building a vertically integrated system that brings customers everything from consumables to sensors to data analysis software. The result is enabling scientists and engineers to spend more time on analysis and experiment design and less time setting up, cleaning, sterilizing, calibrating, organizing, sampling, merging data, etc. The next few years will be extremely transformative for Caladan and we are looking for engineers to join our experienced team to bring an amazing product to a rapidly growing market. If you are interested in automation x synthetic biology x ML/AI we want to hear from you! See you at SynBioBeta! - Mike https://lnkd.in/e-9ken5b
