We love hearing from past Space Grand Challenge participants and it's even more exciting when they become California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo students! Henry Danielson recently chatted with Jess Alencaster, who is now a Cal Poly computer science major with a concentration in privacy and security. Here’s what Jess had to say about participating in SGC during high school, “While playing SGC, I was introduced to Cal Poly through my high school's CTE pathway program coordinators. One of them, who was also my computer science teacher and a Cal Poly alumna, helped me solidify "Learn by Doing". One thing that stood different in SGC was the scenarios that were gamified and enabled me to interact with elements in the game. Many other CTF’s are different because they don’t gamify the interactive environment. I loved moving around as a character which was unique and felt like I was a practicing security researcher.” While in high school, Jess was president of their cybersecurity club and their technology academy which provided a CTE pathway for students. Their cybersecurity club team won first place in SGC and they were thrilled to receive SGC jerseys! Jess was awarded the National Cyber Scholars in 2024 as one of California’s 50 recipients. Jess is currently in the Cal Poly SEC and Hack4Impact clubs and enjoys learning about new cybersecurity topics. Jess has obtained the following certifications: GIAC Cloud Security Essentials Certification (GCLD) GIAC Foundational Cybersecurity Technologies (GFACT) #calpolycci #cybersecurity #SpaceGrandChallenge #learnbydoing #noyceschool #calpolysanluisobispo Cal Poly Noyce School of Applied Computing Aerospace Village
