Leadership development infused with adventure.

关于我们

Cairn Leadership Strategies partners with organizations to develop human capital through a rigorous leadership curriculum fused with outdoor adventure. We use an innovative combination of experiential learning, rigorous leadership curriculum based on current research and thought leadership, and expert leadership coaches to move organizations forward. What makes us different? Experienced leaders as guides: Our guides are all experienced business and military leaders who have trained and certified to guide outdoor adventures on the side. They bring current leadership experience and years of experience to the conversation around campfires and on rope teams. More rigor than fun and games: We combine an MBA level leadership curriculum with tried and true learning opportunities with an experiential approach to drive more than double the typical transfer of training in similar leadership and team development programs. Teams develop more cohesion and trust, leaders remember key lessons for years instead of weeks, and your culture benefits from shared stories of overcoming adversity together. Benchmarking: We begin with a comprehensive team diagnostic or intentional leadership assessment to benchmark a leader or team. We also offer DISC, Team DISC, and Leadership Circle Profile assessments for teams and individuals to establish a clear baseline for training. Fully customized: We fully customize the experience to match the team's preferred location, challenge level and team development outcomes. For individual leaders looking to use company development incentives, we offer Crux Society. Sign up for a six month membership that includes a Leadership Circle Profile 360 Assessment, an adventure of your choice, monthly leadership coaching, and bimonthly books you choose to accelerate your leadership trajectory.

  • People don't care because of a caring personality, they care because they have the discipline to do the things that show they care.

Over the last two weeks I have shared articles about understanding and regulating emotions. This week I dive into how and when to use empathy. You might be surprised. Emotional empathy has a lot of downsides (enough for Paul Bloom to write an entire book about them). Cognitive empathy has a lot of upsides (and you probably are not as good at it as you think you are). Caring is a skill, NOT a perspective. If you are not on our leadership tips email, get on it here before this article comes out! https://lnkd.in/ghJ_DeUf Next week, I will be putting it all together with a breakdown of social skills. Don't miss it!

  • Newest article just hit the street. Do you have emotional fluency? Research says, probably not... Here are some easy things you can do to change that.

Not having high emotional perception and understanding is like going to a foreign country without knowing any of their language or culture. You have fun and bumble around from sight to sight, but you miss the main thing. You smile and point a things, but get frustrated and can't express why. You don't make any new friends or connections because no one can talk to you. It's generally an OK experience, but could have been SO much better. In our most recent article I share highly practical ways to increase your emotional literacy without signing up for a Rosetta Stone tone and body language course (that does not exist.) If you read it, I would love to hear what you think! Did it work? Are there different ways you have learned to perceive and understand your emotions? https://lnkd.in/gh6P6a2a

Facilitator. Organizational Development Consultant. Leadership Coach. Adventurer.

Leading can be hard. Following can be hard. Leading and following when you're tired, stressed, and things aren't going the way you hoped can be really hard. This is why I value outdoor experiential learning so much - we're pushed outside our comfort zones, can't control much of our environment, and the impact of our decisions becomes quickly apparent. Managing all this effectively requires a good deal of emotional intelligence. My friend, Knight Campbell from Cairn Leadership Strategies, provides an excellent example of this principle in wilderness settings - check it out:

It was on a NOLS course that I first heard someone say that they valued equanimity. This means accepting the world around us without labeling what happens from moment to moment as 'good' or 'bad.' Equanimity is invaluable in austere environments like Alaska where a pleasant sunny day can turn into a snowstorm without warning. It's also a path to a more stable and productive life. Instead of getting angry at the unfair weather ruining our day, we can celebrate with a snowball fight. Good? Bad? It just depends. Equanimity is not about not caring, it's about putting space between us and our (sometimes) arbitrary beliefs. It's about allowing room for the opposite of our beliefs to exist. It's about multiplying opportunities that chance puts in our ways by not judging too quickly. In emotional regulation, Stoics looked at equanimity like a spinning top. When you poke a top, it wobbles a few times and then spins back to a stable equilibrium. In this weeks #emotionalintelligence breakdown, I explore this and other tools you can use to more effectively regulate your emotions. You'll read how to start responding to emotions intentionally instead of reacting in ways you regret. If you are not signed up for our leadership tips, get on the list (link in comments!) Thank you Cole for making me think more deeply on equanimity!

  • Even if we perceive our emotions, they can still toss us about like a canoe on the ocean. Make sure you are signed up for the next part of our four part EQ series with a deep dive into how to regulate emotions without losing your soul!

Senior Operations Director with 10+ years of team and business leadership experience in the US, Canada, Africa, and Afghanistan

Two weeks ago I was working with Knight guiding a group of faculty from the Naval Academy on a winter ascent of Mount Washington, famous for having the worst recorded weather on the planet, as part of a Cairn Leadership Strategies workshop. We had spent the day before having deep facilitated conversations with our clients on how to identify their core values and use them as decision tools, ways to recognize and evaluate their emotions to build resilience, and the power and pitfalls of the human capacity for filling in unspoken meaning during communication. Mount Washington provided a perfect environment for them to reflect on and test out the concepts we had discussed, cementing the learnings through experience. I love working for Cairn because the model just works. We intentionally craft our workshops around your most pressing leadership development needs, building our classes and discussions based on the latest research, pairing them with a complementary and challenging outdoor activities to allow immediate application of the concepts we cover. All our guides have experience as leaders in top tier companies, the military, and non-profits; our personal experience means we aren't just teaching theory, we are sharing what works for us as leaders in organizations like yours. We lean on a combination of thoughtful study, practical leadership experience, and outdoor skill to guide your team through every phase of the workshop, seamlessly integrating the experience to deepen learning. If you are interested, I'm happy to chat from my perspective as a guide or to link you up with Knight or Tyler Van Horn to discuss how Cairn can support your leadership development goals.

Director of Influencer Development | Developer of Leadership Developers | Speaker | Organizational Culture | Resilience and Resilient Organizations

Two weeks ago, I was preparing to embark the next morning on both a personal and professional challenge, summitting Mount Washington in the winter! Personally, I did not know what to expect other than it would be arduous, cold (that’s my Achilles’ heel), and a team building experience. Professionally, the Stockdale Center’s Influence the Influencer program was partnering with Cairn Leadership Strategies for the first time. I knew the event would serve to develop the Naval Academy’s leadership developers (faculty, staff, and coaches - specifically our Stockdale Associate Fellows, who invest a year in developing themselves as leadership developers). However, I did not grasp how powerful the event would be. All of us learned about the critical importance of working as a team, supporting one another through arduous experiences, meaningful and accurate feedback, and practiced individual and team grit. All skills of the utmost importance as we develop leaders to serve in the Navy and Marine Corps. Thank you to Knight Campbell and Tyler Van Horn who worked for months to create an event to fit our needs and embed these important lessons.

Teams are dynamic. They change from moment to moment and need different skills and behaviors from members and leaders from moment to moment. Unfortunately humans think statically. When I have a certain emotion I think of it as how I am not a moment in time that is rapidly changing. When I look at a lake I see a lake, not a massive watershed system of evaporation, rain, and snow melt in dynamic tension. I don't think this is going to change, but it's a good reminder to stay adaptable from moment to moment, not from week to week. I've taken a lot of groups up to the top of Mount Washington in the winter, but taking this group of United States Naval Academy staff on a winter summit was a dream come true to me. We dug into building community, exploring emotions, practicing perspective taking, testing out motivation theories, a lot of deep shared laughter, and some serious reflection. Huge thank you to the fellows and Celeste Raver, PhD for trusting us on a winter climb in New Hampshire and giving it everything you had!

Psychological safety is not about withholding criticism. It’s about enabling people to speak up without fear. The goal is not to lower our standards. It’s to replace knee-jerk reactions with open-minded consideration. All ideas are welcome. Not all views are equally valid. As Amy Edmondson says: "Make it discussable."
