Happy Black History Month! Today we invite you to consider the words of Desmond Tutu, an influential South African Anglican cleric and Noble Peace Prize recipient. Desmond Tutu was born in Klerksdor, South Africa in 1931 and was raised in his father’s South African mission schools. After spending some time as a schoolteacher, Tutu became an ordained Anglican priest in 1961 after attending St. Peter’s Theological College. Later in 1966 he received a Masters in Arts from King’s College London. Tutu would spend much of his life working for the church at varying levels, serving as the associate director for the World Council of Churches from 1972-1975. In 1975 Desmond Tutu became the first Black South African to be appointed dean of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg. In 1978 he became the secretary of the South African Council of Churches. In the 1980s Tutu was a spokesperson for Black South Africans in search of true equality. He drew attention to apartheid and suggested it was time to dismantle the racial charged policies. Tutu advocated for nonviolent protest within South Africa, and urged international countries to apply economic pressure to South Africa. For his efforts in fighting against South Africa’s apartheid, Desmond Tutu received the 1984 Noble Prize for Peace – sending a message to the South African President that the world supported the pleas of Black South Africans. In 1985 Tutu became the first Black Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg, and in 1986 he was the first Black archbishop of Cape Town – leading to him accepting the position of chancellor at the University of the Western Cape. In the 1990s Tutu supported democracy moving into South Africa and becoming “the Rainbow nation”. In 1995 President Nelson Mandela appointed Tutu to preside over the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate the human rights abuses from the apartheid era. In 2010 Tutu retired from public life, later receiving an award from the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in 2012 and the Templeton Prize in 2013. His influence and impact in South Africa and beyond cannot be understated. Desmond Tutu died December 26, 2021 in Cape Town, South Africa.
