Promoting the rule of law through the professional development of legal and law enforcement practitioners worldwide.
关于我们
The Center for American and International Law, or CAIL, is a nonprofit organization that has been dedicated to advancing the legal and law enforcement professions and improving justice worldwide for over 75 years. Through the work of our specialized institutes, such as the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration and our impactful Criminal Justice and Actual Innocence programs, we provide continuing education and professional development to lawyers and law enforcement officials in the United States and around the world. Our programs enable those who are tasked with protecting the rights of others to learn, collaborate, and engage in dialogue and the exchange of ideas about contemporary challenges. In doing so, we improve the justice system from within by elevating the standards for the legal and law enforcement professions. By fostering education, ethical practices, and international cooperation, CAIL promotes the rule of law, ensuring fairness, accountability, and protection of rights, which are fundamental to a just society.

Every year, Academy participants arrive as strangers and leave bonded by shared learning, deep discussions, and experiences that extend far beyond the classroom. The friendships forged here last well beyond the program, shaping careers and creating a global network of legal professionals. A lifetime of connections - we wouldn’t have it any other way!
One of the best aspects of the Academy of American and International Law is the relationships formed by the participants. Every year the participants return home with some of their closest friends. They don't think that will happen--imagining the situation that happens at a short conference--but by the end they feel like they are leaving family to return home. I saw this section in a book, Shift (the second of the Silo Series), and it made me think of the Academy. "The last two weeks had been like summer camp, where being around the same people almost every hour of the day brought a level of familiarity and intimacy that knowing them casually for years could never match. There was something about forced confinement that brought people together." This is one reason we strongly encourage participants to stay at the same hotel (or at least in the same vicinity).

This morning at work, I had the powerful experience of hearing from Anthony Graves, a Texas exoneree who was wrongfully convicted of capital murder and incarcerated for 18 years. He shared his story on the first day of our Capital Defense Program, setting the stage for critical education topics for the Criminal Defense attorneys in the room. His wrongful conviction and near execution highlight the importance of continuing legal education. Programs like this help attorneys stay informed, challenge injustices, and uphold the rule of law. As a Development professional, I can sometimes get caught up in the daily tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture. But hearing firsthand how failures in the justice system devastate lives is a reminder of why the work we do at CAIL matters. I’m grateful for the CAIL Criminal Justice and Actual Innocence Programs and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Grant Program for making these educational opportunities possible. #RuleofLaw, #LegalEducation,#MakeanImpact

It’s ALWAYS a good day at The Center for American and International Law when we at the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration have an opportunity to serve our law enforcement partners. But, I will also say on a personal level that I particularly LOVE arriving on mornings just like this one today when the craftsmaship of the skies is displayed in full glory. Beauty is all around us. Sometimes it’s just easier to see.
