With the Bills' home opening game just two days away, a celebration was in order! In our Buffalo office we hosted an NFL Dip Day, where team members brought in different dips and sported their favorite team's apparel. Ioanna Dinoulis' Buffalo chicken wing dip and Marianela Carela's caramel apple cheesecake dip tied for first place in our Dip Day contest, but Ioanna ultimately took home the first place prize after a quick tiebreaker! I have a friend who's been killing it at work for years. He completely streamlined operations, saved the company a ton of money, saved the day (and the middle of the night) during multiple emergencies, elevated the overall standard of performance, and his team loves working for him. However, he is treated poorly and continually demanded to do more with less, and without appreciation. This will never lower his level of performance. He has too much pride in himself and his work. But, he's been casually looking for about a year now. Biding his time. Holding out for the perfect opportunity. His employer will be devastated, and probably surprised, when he finally gets to give his notice. Last week, what looked like the perfect opportunity finally came up! I updated his resume for him… Me: Did you apply? ?? Him: No. Me: What?! Why??? ?? Him: The application was a nightmare. Me: Shut up, let me see… Here's what I observed: ???? Must create an account with login and password to apply ???? After uploading resume, must manually TYPE in entire work history ???? Must write and attach a cover letter ???? Must obtain and attach 2 reference letters After about 20 minutes of starting the process and figuring out how and when he was going to complete it, and not yet knowing anything about this company with no online presence, he said, “screw it.” He wasn’t sure if all that effort would even be worth it. They also had the following disclaimer posted: “Please be patient with us as we receive hundreds of applications per day- we need time to process applications, therefore calls and emails to follow up only slow down our procedure. Your resume will be reviewed by our team and we will reach out to you should we feel your background meets the qualifications for our roster” Imagine taking all that time and effort to complete the apply process and solicit reference letters, only to be ghosted! A cumbersome application with questionable payoff = lack of applicants. Similarly cumbersome -> you have a manual-type-in application on your website, or a download-write-in-mail/deliver one. It's perfectly ok to have high hiring standards and gather lots of info. Just make sure: ?? The apply process is quick and mobile friendly. It shouldn't take more than 5 mins to say, “Hey, I'm interested!” ?? Collect all the other information later after establishing mutual interest. ?? Communicate with everyone. Let them know where they stand. This can easily be automated in an applicant tracking system (ATS). My friend's employer is unknowingly fortunate this time and the company he may have really wanted to work for unknowingly missed out on a superstar.
