Today Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa had the privilege of hosting CAHABA’s kickoff to 2025! We all left better off after hearing from Roy S. Johnson and his journey as a journalist. This man is real and a real advocate and ambassador of all of Birmingham. Lindsey Setzer is now the CAHABA Board Chair and with her new board, this group is poised for great, great things in 2025 and beyond. It was humbling to be recognized, along with other board members (Carlos Otalora & Stephanie McElmurray) for our service to CAHABA. I am also very proud of my team at Ross Bridge for making today an unforgettable moment of gracious hospitality for our VIP guests! Thank you Melissa Chambers, Josie Gibson, Anna Claire Etheridge, Katherine Jenkins, Lauren Miller, Robert Kamm, and Rick Smith! Special shout out to our floral partners, Interiorscapes, Inc. for the outstanding centerpieces! Lastly, thanks to the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau and the board for your continued support of CAHABA and the hospitality community in Birmingham, Hoover, and all the other surrounding cities! We couldn’t do what we do without your support! J. John Oros Jr. John Lyda

Ever notice how easy it is to convince yourself that a professional group is "cliquey" or "elitist" when you're the new person? I see this mindset trap all the time. Here are some key strategies I've learned for successfully breaking into established professional circles: ? Actively seek out "wingmen" who can help make introductions and provide context ? Challenge your initial assumptions about group dynamics (that "exclusive" circle might just be old friends catching up!) ? Make yourself a regular by consistently showing up to events in your first year I've watched countless professionals misread social dynamics and walk away from valuable opportunities. What assumptions have you had to challenge when joining new professional groups? Were you surprised by what you discovered when you dug deeper?
