    At Caged Bird HR, we've seen a concerning pattern in Meta's recent layoffs that we feel compelled to address. As an employee advocacy company that's been contacted by numerous Meta employees seeking support, we've identified a troubling strategy: Meta appears to have deliberately timed these cuts to occur well after their last performance review cycle, yet before initiating a new one. This calculated approach creates significant barriers for affected employees seeking to contest their termination. Without recent performance documentation, it becomes nearly impossible to demonstrate that their selection was unwarranted or potentially discriminatory. We've witnessed firsthand how this lack of documentation has left talented professionals without the evidence they need to advocate for themselves. The message is clear: employees must proactively protect themselves by documenting performance feedback regularly. We strongly recommend: Schedule bi-weekly check-ins with your manager and follow up with email summaries Document all achievements and positive feedback in writing Use tools like the Wrk Receipts app to track your contributions and manager acknowledgments systematically Request written mid-cycle performance assessments even if not company policy While companies do need flexibility to adjust their workforce, they also have an ethical obligation to maintain transparent evaluation processes throughout employment cycles. The landscape has fundamentally shifted. As AI systems instantly access and process vast knowledge bases, the value proposition of traditional education is being challenged. Degrees that once opened doors now often lead to debt without clear returns. Meanwhile, AI is redefining what's valuable in the workplace. Large language models can write a passable essay or research report in seconds (Stanford HAI, 2023). Specialized AI tools are automating tasks that once required years of education, with McKinsey Global Institute (2023) estimating that 30% of hours worked globally could be automated by 2030. What remains uniquely human—and increasingly valuable (World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report, 2023): ? Creative problem-solving that breaks established patterns? ? Critical evaluation of information across diverse contexts ? Interpersonal intelligence and relationship management? ? Ethical decision-making with nuanced understanding The future belongs not to those with the most degrees, but to those who can: 1. Adapt rapidly to changing conditions 2. Collaborate effectively with both humans and AI 3. Apply knowledge across disciplines in novel ways 4. Demonstrate unique value beyond what AI provides Education remains important, but perhaps the form needs to evolve.     There's no such thing as an "informal PIP" We're increasingly hearing from employees being placed on what managers call "informal" or "unofficial" Performance Improvement Plans. Let's be absolutely clear: There is no such thing as an informal PIP. Companies are using this terminology to create a false sense of security while still building documentation that can lead to termination. When your manager says, "This isn't a formal PIP, just some areas we'd like you to work on," they're still creating a record of alleged performance issues. What employees need to understand: ? All performance discussions can become part of your employment record ? The "informal" label doesn't protect you from eventual termination ? These conversations deserve the same level of seriousness and documentation on your part We've seen countless cases where workers were blindsided by termination after being told their performance concerns were just "informal feedback." Your rights don't change based on what a company calls its documentation process.
