K-12 schools face urgent infrastructure challenges, and the CAUSE coalition aims to create a standardized tool to measure how school design impacts learning. The coalition unites educators, designers, and researchers to drive meaningful, evidence-based investments with enormous upsides for learning and well-being. Renae Mantooth’s article in Essentials highlights how CAUSE’s work is paving the way for schools to align design with actual teaching needs. Our team will be talking at EDspaces in Houston next week. #CAUSE is making an impact – the coalition just presented at two conferences in two cities on the same day! The share-outs with designers and educators have been amazing and insightful. For example, discussion around what should be standardized versus unique questions in a post-occupancy evaluation and how can school leverage data from this tool for impactful #SchoolDesign. Read more in our most recent blog as Michael C. Ralph and Raechel French share their reflections and lessons learned from the recent presentations. More to come as #CAUSE moves forward – onward and upward! #K12 #EducationResearch #ImpactfulDesign?#PostOccupancyEvaluation https://lnkd.in/e3qWGm_x

We are a proud partner of this call to action for a #buildingbraincoalition to explore how building better cities, workplaces, schools, hospitals, neighborhoods and homes can build better #brainhealth and a flourishing #braineconomy. The event was hugely interdisciplinary with #Texas as its impact area. We are excited about all the conversations, ideas and interest in partnerships. Watch this space for how to join the coalition. #builtenvironment #design #brainhealth
Last week, CADRE, HKS, and Center for BrainHealth?had the privilege of bringing together leaders for the Building Brains Summit. The one-day event featured discussions about shaping the way we live, work, and learn to explore the future of brain health, brain capital and the built environment. As the day unfolded, the room was filled with ideas and collaboration, fueling a sense of optimism for how we can collectively advance brain health through our spaces and cities. Look at the key takeaways from the summit: ?? Train your brain—neuroplasticity is possible at any age. ?? Invest in the brain economy to address mental, fiscal, and planetary health. ?? Create enriching environments for seniors that prioritize flourishing, not just safety. ?? Prioritize learning and emotional resilience in high-stress work environments. ?? Strengthen our natural connection to nature in both design and practice. ?? Explore “experiential plasticity” through diverse, meaningful experiences that foster neuroplasticity. ?? Build partnerships and coalitions to bridge research and real-world applications. We are grateful to all the experts for their thought-provoking insights and inspiring conversations including City of Dallas Council Member Jaynie Schultz?for demonstrating how Texas can serve as a living laboratory for these vital conversations. Big thank to our sponsors — Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy, Brain Capital Alliance, Perkins&Will, Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA), International Interior Design Association and Brain Health Action, AARP who helped make this event a success. #buildingbrains #buildingbrainscoalition

Every dollar invested towards modernizing schools should benefit students and teachers. But how do we measure that impact? Or how often do we measure that impact? ? Brad Hughes, Renae Mantooth and Michael C. Ralph are part of the CAUSE Coalition, and they've found a troubling inconsistency in post-occupancy evaluations (POEs) among the top K-12 design firms: Only 4 of the top 13 firms have publicly available K-12 POEs, despite their combined $831M in revenue. ? Read the team's article here in Learning By Design to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eNWTBq9V Ultimately, we need standardized, open-source POE tools to better capture how design affects learning outcomes. ? The design industry must do more to ensure accountability and improve the environments we create for future generations. #SchoolDesign #K12 #PostOccupancyEvaluation #EducationResearch #ImpactfulDesign #CAUSE

Bubbling with excitement post Environmental Design Research Association conference. We (Raechel French, Michael C. Ralph, Erika Eitland, MPH, ScD and I) had the opportunity to share out what the Coalition for the Advanced Understanding of School Environments (CAUSE) has been working toward over the past year. It was energizing, refreshing, and reassuring to engage with our #designresearch community to discuss the real need (and barriers) of industry wide adoption of a standardized K12 occupancy evaluation tool. It is clear that we can only achieve this with an open-science posture for an open-source tool. We have already made so much progress thanks to CADRE convening this coalition and conversations that began at EDRA two years ago thanks to Upali Nanda’s leadership and the incredible support from Susan Chung and Aletta Van Der Walt. We are so much stronger when we come together - thankful for AustinISD, HKS, Inc., Multistudio, and Perkins&Will that believe in this mission and enable us to take this on. Emily Chmielewski, EDAC, Kimari Phillips, CHES?, EDAC, Lennie Scott-Webber, PhD, B Sanborn, Leonardo González Sangri, Deborah Wingler, PhD, MSD-HHE, EDAC, LSSYB, Ana Pinto-Alexander, EDAC, FIIDA, RID your experience, expertise, and skills are absolutely vital - truly in awe of the brain power of our collective. We are actively seeking sponsors that want to join in on our pursuit of elevating the K12 School Design industry to improve the lives of our teachers and students. Please reach out if you want to join the CAUSE! https://lnkd.in/eqtiRWcv

Just in time for National Nurses Week! Preliminary results from CADRE's coalition research project on #nurseburnout with HKS, Inc. and MillerKnoll. This social listening project has identified the top five types of fatigue that contribute to #nurseburnout. Check it out! #healthcaredesign #designresearch #nursesatisfaction
Stress and burnout are affecting nurses at alarming rates, leading to a shortage of these vital caregivers in health systems worldwide. That’s why HKS, Inc. created a research coalition alongside CADRE and MillerKnoll to study causes of nurse burnout and how physical space impacts stress levels. Conducted through an innovative approach, the research identifies gaps in prior research about how the built environment impacts well-being and illuminates authentic experiences that challenge dominant narratives about nurse burnout. Learn more about this timely research and how we intend to alleviate this global challenge through design. https://lnkd.in/eujJzFQz #NursesWeek #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #research #design Deborah Wingler, PhD, MSD-HHE, EDAC, LSSYB Michelle Ossmann, PhD, MSN
