Big milestone alert: 1,500 learners in the CADclass Discord! When we started this journey, we had a simple question: Could we build an online learning community around CAD? We had untested ideas, some big ambitions, and no guarantee it would work. But today, we’re celebrating 1,500 Discord members and 20,000+ who have joined us to explore CAD, design, and making—together. What did we think people would want? ? A hands-on video course with exciting projects like rockets, drones, and skateboards ? A physical + digital book to complement the learning experience ? A supportive community to share the journey with Turns out, we were right. And we couldn’t have done it without our incredible partners, friends, and collaborators. Huge thanks to Dale Dougherty (MAKE Magazine), Chad Orcutt (Community Shop Class), Maximilian Rosa (Sierra Service Project), John Peros (Autodesk), Emma Fletcher (Learn to Solder Kits, LLC), Gina Alatorre Lujan (@madestudios), Stephanie Santoso (MakerUSA), Edward Charlwood, Mike Harmon, Guillermo Melantoni at Tinkercad Education Tom Cappelletti & Richard Gentry at Sacramento City College Kristin Berbawy, Alan Puccinelli Prusa Research, Monique Brown, John Pellman, Ed.D, Uri Griner SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity and so many more who believed in this vision. To our learners, contributors, and fellow CAD enthusiasts—thank you. We’re just getting started. Stay tuned for some big announcements soon?? #CADclass #CADeducation #Makers #3Dprinting #Design #STEM

A few thoughts about our first Tinkercad lessons at the tinkering club we run at our local primary school: - The children are really enjoying it and picking up the basics quickly. - Using 'Mastering Tinkercad' by Edward Charlwood has been a godsend. The book has a clear and easy to follow structure while still leaving plenty of room for creativity. It strikes the right balance between guidance and freedom, which helps keep the sessions on track. Also, having a printed book that the children can take home makes a big difference - it gives them something to refer back to outside of the club. - Many of the children aren’t used to using a mouse. At home, they mostly use tablets and phones, and at school, they only have Chromebooks with touchpads, no mice. Clicking, dragging, and other mouse gestures feel awkward for them. Teaching basic computer skills wasn’t originally part of my plan, but I’m glad I’m doing it. Better they learn it now than have secondary school teachers trying to fit it into their lessons instead of focusing on their actual content. - Sim Lab: This has been a huge hit. The moment I let them catch a glimpse of it in the first session, they were hooked. They love that they can interact with their creations, experimenting with different materials, simulating gravity, earthquakes, and, of course, throwing anvils and rubber ducks at their structures. What’s great is that they’re now modifying their designs, testing how they behave in the simulator, and adjusting when things don’t work as planned. - Structure: I’ve found that starting with 30 minutes of free creative work at the beginning of the session, followed by about 60 minutes focused on the lesson content, works well. I also make sure to allow playtime for each book chapter we go through, it really helps them absorb the material and experiment with what they’ve just learned.
