How to get significantly better at cybersecurity…(what works for me) Volume > Refine > Repeat 1. Learn a bunch, do the thing a bunch 2. Refine your process by analyzing the things you’ve learned 3. Do that process again Example (what works for me): -Volume- When I began learning pentesting, I spent as much time as I possibly could learning about pentesting, practicing pentesting techniques, studying and researching vulnerabilities and misconfigurations. The goal here for me is really immersing in the subject. It took a lot more time than I realized for things to really sink in. -Refine- After a while I began to understand what rocks to look under and which ones to ignore. I then took time periodically to look back on the stuff I learned and analyze in a sense what I learned so far and more accurately determine what else I need to focus on. An emphasis here for me is doing. Progress is made by doing. -Repeat- Do it all over again. Continue to immerse myself in the subject, learn what to focus on, what will help me get to the next level, experiment, try things and get better. -Share- An optional step for me, but one I truly enjoy is to share my experiences, knowledge, things I’ve learned, tips and tricks, etc. For me the focus lately has been on helping to arm defenders with tools, knowledge, and resources to better protect their organizations. One persons opinion, this is what has worked for me. I’d be curious how similar or not my approach is to others, so let me know in the replies!

Mental wellness is essential in IT, but it’s often overlooked. In a field known for long hours, high stakes, and rapid change, managing mental health is crucial to staying productive and engaged. IT professionals often face chronic stress and burnout, but small shifts can make a big difference. Integrating mental health practices into daily routines—like mindfulness breaks or scheduled downtime—helps to prevent burnout before it begins. A few great resources: - Mindfulness apps like Headspace and Calm for guided meditation - Virtual therapy through platforms like BetterHelp or Talkspace - Resilience training programs that teach long-term stress management Investing time in these resources boosts productivity and work satisfaction. Mental wellness isn’t a luxury; it’s a vital part of long-term career success. When we prioritize mental health, we build a healthier, more resilient IT community.
