Join us on March 25th for a webinar on homeownership opportunities for lower income communities. I'll be sharing data about the scale of missing middle and other homeownership types beyond single-family in western states, and we'll hear about financing and development opportunities and challenges from a panel including Muhammad T. Alameldin, Jesse Ibarra, Ahmad Abu-Khalaf, and Adam Briones, moderated by Amaya Bravo France. I'm delighted to be organizing this event with Tracy Choi and Jessica Monge Coria. In today's niche-but-important news: how well meaning building codes can make housing less affordable and less accessible! https://lnkd.in/g6cYTQB8 "Based on one man’s hunch, most of the country’s new elevators grew by several square feet overnight. The medical benefits were not quantified, and the cost impact was reported as “none.” It is one of the many small rules that have divorced our national building standards from the rest of the world. According to research by the building policy wonk Stephen Smith, who recounted this story in a report last year, changes like these are one reason it now costs three times as much to install an elevator in the U.S. as in Switzerland or South Korea."

"“The rental market here is saturated with availability,” said Jody Lockshin, a veteran?Austin broker?and the owner of Habitat Hunters. Landlords have almost no leverage, and she has seen buildings offer three months free to new tenants and rate reductions to keep ones already in place." https://lnkd.in/g4Ras6Tb

"A 2023?study of California wildfires?conducted by U.S. Forest Service researchers found that “new fire regimes are increasingly affecting more urban census tracts statewide, meaning greater numbers and more diverse groups of people are being and possibly will be affected by wildfires.” These changes, authors wrote, meant that more Latino, Asian and Black Californians were being impacted by wildfire than ever before." https://lnkd.in/dXxTFuaA

We are hiring an Associate Research Director of Land Use and Supply to help advance the understanding of U.S. housing markets, specifically related to expanding the supply and affordability of housing through land use and zoning policies, with a concern for climate and equity implications. The Associate Research Director will identify new research opportunities, develop research design and conceptual frameworks, and produce evidence-driven research to help inform housing policy debates in California and nationally. Excellent new blog post from Daniel McCue of the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies on the rising costs of homeownership. Unfortunately, data shows that things are especially dire for lower-income seniors. https://lnkd.in/eCnVmbhD

"The FHA is one of the largest mortgage insurers in the world and has insured more than 40 million home loans since 1934, according to the agency’s website. The insurance is a key resource for many first-time buyers and low-income Americans, and can help protect lenders as well. That’s opened up more credit to buyers who might not normally be able to snag a home-purchase loan." https://lnkd.in/gt2Yks6x
