It can be nearly impossible to spot all of our own biases and inclinations, and to not perpetuate the messaging we received in our own formative years. 68% of the parents in this study were mothers. Research like this study in the Journal of Developmental Psychology from the American Psychological Association is so crucial to breaking the cycle of viewing math as a gendered activity, pursuit, and passion. Thanks to Kim Elsesser and Forbes for the write-up, and of course to researchers Suzanne Varnell, Patrick Ehrman, Sona C. Kumar, Jacqueline Sandel, Alexa Ellis, and David J. Purpura, as well as Purdue University for supporting and sharing this vital knowledge! https://lnkd.in/esHtFEHv

Honored to be among those interviewed for this helpful report charting a course for a math-positive nation in the U.K.
We are pleased to share the final report in our series investigating how to address systemic challenges and create opportunities to help more students excel in maths: ‘Investigating Maths Attitudes in England’. Today, on #InternationalDayofMathematics, Tes magazine have published Chioma Etienne’s op-ed on the subject – see link in comments. Our report, informed by a comprehensive literature review and over 80 expert interviews, explores the cultural and psychological factors shaping how we think and feel about maths. It highlights why addressing maths attitudes is critical for young people's attainment, progression and career pathways. Key insights from the report include: 1?? Many young people in the UK view maths ability as an innate talent. By age 21, 87% did not strongly identify with “being good at maths” – an attitude that impacts their willingness to persevere in the subject. 2?? Maths attitudes matter. They significantly influence numeracy, educational attainment and progression into post-16 maths studies. The effects of this in later life are profound: adults with low numeracy skills are more than twice as likely to be unemployed, and those in work are far less likely to receive work-related training, get a promotion or receive a pay rise. 3?? These attitudes are often shaped by parents, carers and teachers. In a recent survey of over 2,000 maths teachers, 90% reported hearing comments like “I’m not a maths person” from parents – a sentiment that perpetuates negative attitudes across generations. Changing how we think and talk about maths will require a collective effort from families, educators and wider society. This report marks the start of our journey to understand and improve cultural attitudes towards maths. Over the next year, we will expand on this research through large-scale surveys, qualitative studies and pilot interventions.? We are inviting collaboration from philanthropists, educators and public and third-sector organisations to turn these insights into impactful action. To get in touch, please email [email protected].?
