The C.T. Vivian Foundation will recognize, Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr., our 2025 Kaleidoscope Awards for Literary Excellence Social Justice Honoree. Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr. is a distinguished Civil Rights Movement activist, minister, and educator, globally recognized for his leadership in nonviolent social change. A co-founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), he played pivotal roles in the Nashville Sit-Ins, Freedom Rides, and the Selma Voter Registration Project. He worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as National Program Administrator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and National Coordinator of the Poor People’s Campaign. A Harvard-educated scholar, Dr. LaFayette has advanced nonviolence education through leadership roles at institutions like Emory University and The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center). His impact extends worldwide, earning him prestigious honors such as the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and the National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award. His legacy is further cemented through books, documentaries, and a street named in his honor in Selma, Alabama, as he continues to inspire through advocacy and education.
