I've often found that teams (especially early on at startups) THINK they need to hire someone, but really, it goes something like this: --> growing pile of "misfit projects" that current team lacks bandwidth and/or skillset to take on --> pile hits critical mass, the team is FEELING the burden --> grab a few items off the top of the pile and try to spin it into a job description SOMETIMES this works out, and the logical next step is to hire a full time employee. But more often than not, what's really needed is one or two key projects, executed well and quickly; then that foundation allows the existing team to proceed more effectively. From a resources perspective, this is better done by an outside contractor. Bonus: you avoid the pitfall of hiring someone without having really defined their role beyond the next few weeks or months. This can lead to headcount bloat and employee dissatisfaction, both things that startups in particular need to avoid. But can an outside contractor really understand your unique business needs?
