What’s your “aha!” moment when you realize your self-awareness could use a little boost—ever catch yourself in a cringe-worthy situation? ?? Self-awareness and social skills are essential in both personal and professional success. Without them, it's easy to misinterpret situations, miss key opportunities for connection, and struggle to build meaningful relationships. Developing these skills can be a game changer in navigating any environment ?? The DiSC Agile EQ model provides a powerful solution for developing both self-awareness and social skills. ?? Here’s a lighthearted story?? A young sales rep, let’s call him Dan, was fresh into his first big sales meeting with a regional hospitality group. He’d read all the product specs, memorized every feature, and was ready to impress. What he didn’t do, however, was consider the personalities or culture of the group he was about to meet. Walking into the room, he kicked things off with an over-the-top icebreaker he found online. "Alright, everyone, let’s stand up and do a ‘power pose!’" he said, throwing his arms in the air like a superhero. The room of seasoned executives, all in their 50s and 60s, stared at him in dead silence. One of them looked like he was trying to decide if Dan was serious or just lost. Realizing the energy wasn’t matching, Dan awkwardly moved on, but instead of adjusting his tone, he kept going with his upbeat, almost hyper delivery—throwing in jokes and slang that were completely out of place for the formal, no-nonsense group. By the end of the meeting, he had said "awesome" more times than anyone could count, but not a single connection was made. Later, Dan reflected on what went wrong. He realized that while he was excited and prepared with content, he completely missed the social cues and expectations of his audience. His lack of self-awareness and failure to read the room had cost him the opportunity to make a real connection and tailor his pitch. ??Lesson learned: enthusiasm is great, but knowing your audience is key! ??What could he have done to prepare for the meeting with the regional seasoned executives? How will you navigate this obstacle? ?When your client’s emotions begin to hinder project progress, the key is to approach the situation with empathy and emotional agility. Using the DiSC Agile EQ model, you can assess both your emotional response and your client’s emotional state. This enables you to choose the most effective response, rather than reacting impulsively or letting frustration build.
