We wished a bittersweet farewell to (Rob) Sid Ahrendsen last month and congratulated him on his retirement from Brigham Young University - Idaho. ?? Most recently, Rob worked in the Alumni office as the Alumni Engagement Coordinator. Rob worked for BYU-Idaho for more than 20 years in various roles, including Career Councilor, Academic Advisor, and Career Preparation Manager. Throughout his career, Rob was known for his positive attitude and expertise in career counseling. We will miss seeing Rob, who was a favorite with student employees because of his fun jokes and puns which he would frequently share. Best wishes in retirement, Rob! In June, the BYUI College of Language and Letters and Career Center took students on an expedition to Salt Lake City to learn more about opportunities. The expedition had three different tracks for students to choose from: English/Publishing ??, Public Policy ??, and History/Museums ??. Students in each track visited different companies and organizations, and some visits were all combined. Students chatted with professionals, asked questions, and learned more about ways to apply their majors and skills to a variety of jobs and careers. In total, 21 students participated in the expedition and visited with a total of 18 employers and organizations, including Boncom, Deseret Book Company, Sutherland Institute, Utah Division of Archives & Records Service, and the Office of the Governor of Utah, to name a few. Last week Brigham Young University - Idaho awarded 2,975 graduates with degrees at the conclusion of spring semester. At Commencement, President Meredith reminded the graduates: “Our mission at BYU-Idaho is to develop disciples of Jesus Christ who are leaders in their homes, church, and communities. You depart this special place with a charge to a be disciple leader wherever you go. You leave with a duty to strive to make the world a better place, to build and lift and inspire those you interact with. As you do so, you will be a light to the world. And you can go forward with the assurance that the Lord will be with you for He is the light.” Sister J. Anette Dennis, First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave the address at Commencement. She also reminded the graduates that just as they had help overcoming challenges to reach this point, they would have help and support on the other side of graduation. “You are soon to leave this special place and some of you may be nervous and even a bit fearful concerning what lies before you. That’s a very normal feeling. But always remember that those that are with you and cheering you on are more than those who may be against you.” Congratulations to all spring graduates! Last month, Brigham Young University - Idaho marketing and sales students met with alumni and visited companies in Utah. Some highlights included visits with Verkada, BYU Athletics, Pluralsight, Lucid Software, and Disruptive Advertising. Students were able to ask questions about the industry, learn about opportunities, and network with sales and marketing pros. Later on, students met with sales and marketing alumni at a dinner where they reminisced about classes and shared experiences. Huge thank you to all the faculty and students who participated in this expedition! Student expeditions are a great way to connect with alumni, find out about job and internship opportunities, and explore your chosen field or industry. Students learned valuable insights into non-profit work last night at the Non-Profit 101 Panel, hosted by the BYU-Idaho Career Center. More than 90 students attended and heard from BYU-Idaho faculty members Andra Smith Hansen, Kyle Heuett, and Steve Dennis. After a presentation, students also had time to ask questions. Students learned about the role non-profits play in a community, how they operate and are funded, and possible career opportunities that they offer. Guess how many companies the Career Center employer relations managers have already visited so far in the month of June? *49*! In June, we visited companies such as Walmart, Verkada, FamilySearch, Adobe, Deseret Book Company, and many more in locations in Salt Lake City, Arizona, Arkansas, and New Mexico. Some of these trips were student expeditions where students were able to attend and ask questions. How do these visits help Brigham Young University - Idaho students? These visits: ? Open doors to internships, jobs and other opportunities for students at some great companies. ? Allow students the opportunity to ask questions of industry professionals and tap into their knowledge and experience. ? Give students a chance to prepare for and practice presenting themselves to potential employers. ? Facilitate connections for students so they can build a robust professional network. ?
