At its core, the Polyvagal Theory delves into the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and how it shapes our responses to stress, connection, and safety. Dr. Porges identified three branches of the ANS, each associated with different evolutionary stages and distinct physiological and behavioral responses. Understanding these branches is key to comprehending how our body and mind react in various situations. Dorsal Vagus (Shutdown) - When activated, it can lead to feelings of helplessness, dissociation, and withdrawal. Individuals experiencing high levels of stress may find themselves in this state, characterized by a sense of emotional numbing and disconnection Sympathetic Nervous System (Fight or Flight) - When faced with a perceived threat, this branch activates, preparing the body to either confront the danger or flee from it. Chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system can contribute to anxiety, panic disorders, and other stress-related conditions. Ventral Vagus (Social Engagement) -? Activation of this system fosters feelings of safety, calmness, and the ability to connect with others. Strengthening the ventral vagal response is crucial for promoting mental well-being, as it allows individuals to navigate stressors with resilience and engage in healthy social interactions. If you are looking to better understand your nervous system states, our therapists are prepared to integrate polyvagal theory into the work with you.?

One of the most common yet least discussed responses to uncertainty is the freeze trauma response. The freeze response is triggered when you find yourself in a situation that is inescapable. Unlike the more commonly recognized fight or flight reactions, the freeze response involves a state of paralysis—both mental and physical—that can make it difficult to move forward, adapt, or make decisions in the face of change. Here are some ways to support the freeze response when it occurs:? ?Seeking Support ?Small, Manageable Steps? ?Focusing on the Present? ?Engagement and Action? ?Supportive Techniques (such as breathing) To learn more about these strategies for supporting your freeze response, check out our most recent blog here: https://lnkd.in/enGRXr-c

You had a few dates with someone who you really connected with but it seems they don't feel the same way- what now? Ghosting can be characterized by cutting all contact with someone, usually romantically and with no warning or explanation. This behavior can happen at any stage of a relationship. Here are three ways to tackle being ghosted from a licensed therapist: 1) Self-compassion: Be sure to give yourself grace when dealing with the emotional aftermath of being ghosted. Avoid should statements regarding your situation. The goal is to reframe unnecessary automatic negative self-talk or thoughts. 2) Distraction (When Appropriate): The purpose of distraction is not avoidance, but to allow for reprieve from heavy emotional moments. Pockets of distraction can be likened to the eye of a storm— a break from the chaos in the wake of an emotional disaster. Allow yourself to ebb and flow between phases of feeling and distraction when necessary.? 3) Radical Acceptance: Learning to emotionally let go of the individual and accept the situation has no hard and fast rule. For most people, closure is ideal— but it is not the standard when dealing with a ghoster. Radical acceptance is not that you approve of the situation or the actions for the individual— but that you wholeheartedly acknowledge all who they were, are, and will never be. The aim is to release yourself and your emotional state from the confines of frustration and hurt. Interested in learning more? As we honor February as Black History Month, we wanted to acknowledge the importance of a therapy practice being culturally humble vs culturally competent. Cultural Competency is the idea that culture can be studied, learned, and that those from a different culture can feel seen, heard, and understood through accumulation of knowledge. Culture Humility is the idea that learning about one’s culture is a lifelong process that involves a continuous and open dialogue. It includes self-reflection, a deep understanding, and most importantly, the recognition that each person is uniquely them. At Repose, we prioritize cultural humility and tailor our interventions to each individual, ensuring your needs and values are prioritized throughout the therapeutic process. If you are looking for a culturally humble therapist for the BIPOC community, please reach out for support! #culturalhumility#bipoctherapy#pleasantvilletherapy #nyctherapy?
