This is a clip from a 1970 ABC news report about integration in Houston. In it, we hear the "Chicano" dilemma. The new "Chicano" activists were angered because the integration order and all civil rights legislation benefitted black people and NOT them What did "Chicanos" want? Chicano identity emerged in the LATE '60s after the civil rights act passed. And they were fighting to be recognized as a minority group. You can hear their plight in this young man's speech. This was in the '70s during integration. Mexicans were mad that civil rights legislation benefitted black people and NOT them. They were told "no" because they were white! This is not a "contribution" to civil rights. They were not part of the struggle. The Civil rights struggle was over, and they wanted the benefits.
