A recent study by CSIRO and the Queensland Department of Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation has revealed the significant harm “forever chemicals” like PFAS are causing in Australia’s wildlife. These chemicals are proving to be truly toxic: in Queensland, freshwater turtles exposed to PFAS exhibited severe health issues, including altered metabolic processes, mineral imbalances in eggs, and high rates of shell defects in hatchlings. In some areas, PFAS levels were recorded at up to 30 times higher than at control sites, leading to population declines and threatening long-term survival. It’s disheartening to see these impacts, especially knowing that these chemicals persist in our environment, accumulating in the soil, water, and living organisms. This research highlights the urgency of addressing PFAS contamination and finding effective solutions to protect our ecosystems and wildlife. A recent study by the University of Sydney highlights the need for stronger regulations, ensuring that consumers don’t bear the financial burden of fixing this environmental issue. Alex is an experienced engineer with a strong background in project management and has led new ventures in the built environment and health sectors. She also runs her own startup, Milkdrop.
